Maryland grows more politically polarized, like rest of U.S.

COLLEGE PARK, Maryland — While Maryland voted for the Democratic candidate in 2016 for the seventh straight presidential election, a deepening Republican loyalty in more rural areas of the state indicates increased polarization throughout Maryland, a Capital News Service analysis found.

While liberal-leaning urban areas helped Hillary Clinton secure Maryland’s 10 electoral votes and Democratic candidates won all but one U.S. House seat Tuesday, the state’s liberal base didn’t perform according to expectations.

Donald Trump received a higher percentage of votes than Mitt Romney in 15 of the 18 Maryland counties that voted Republican in 2012, while Clinton failed to expand on President Barack Obama’s coalition from 2012.

Of the six counties that voted Democratic four years ago, only two counties — Howard and Montgomery — supported Clinton at higher rates than they supported Obama.

I have friends in Western Maryland. We both have the same grievances with the state of Maryland. We have no voice and we are both the bastard stepchildren of this state. There is talk about Western Maryland joining West Virginia or PA, and the Eastern Shore to separate and form our own state. This has been talked about since the 1930's.

The voters in DC voted to make DC the 51st state so it could happen... but politicians won't let it...

So how can we fix this??

It's called Democracy, people are going to have different views than us. Time to get over it. Why would you want to surround yourself with everyone who thought the exact same as you? It defeats progress, conversation and advancement.

Essentially, the areas surrounding DC and Baltimore are out of sync with the rest of the state. Those two areas have the highest levels of dependency on government handouts, unemployment, criminal activity, and incivility.

The rest of the state is common-sense and conservative leaning!

There really isn't a 'cure' - rather we need to outvote it!

It is just not the same since the people that live in the urban areas are now free. When they lived in the other areas of MD and were property of the land owners/republicans they couldn't vote. This is sarcasm not a racist rant. SMH that there are still people on the shore that believe it though.

9:56 - thank goodness - we certainly don't want another dumbocrat representative and two dumbocrat senators...aside from the fact that the area is a total cesspool of cronyism and lawlessness!

Eastern Shore of MD, Eastern Shore of VA, and 2 Lower Counties of DE need to secede and become 1 state.

11;30 I agree.

11:30 That would be great for the good old boy network and Joe would not be able to keep up with the behind closed doors self dealing that would ensue.

All the blue areas are close to federal government and all work for and depend on them
Not the real working class people
They only care about their own pockets and not anybody else.

The takers are in blue and the workers are in red.

Look to the blue areas for the highest rates of local and county government corruption. The same goes for the non-profit organization, welfare and food stamp thieves.

Sounds good to me! We can put toll booths on each way onto the peninsula. Maryland would fight this though. They won't want to lose the sale tax they collect in Ocean City.

We should remain as the state of Maryland. All those blue counties can be added to DC when they become a state.

Secession was tried once. It was s failure drenched in blood. Better to educate those blue areas about their soft and sometimes not-so-soft racism, sexism and defeatist attitudes. By the way, Democrats were the slave holders and the racism in the Democrat party remains. Republicans have always been the champion of personal freedom and individual rights. -Thomas Paine

This map tells you who runs MD. The entire state does not have a say.
