Constitutional carry gun laws proliferate as states embrace self-defense as 'natural born' right

Amid the rising number of Americans licensed to carry a concealed handgun, more states are passing laws that don’t require a permit to carry firearms, embracing the view that self-defense is a “natural born” right.

Missouri became the fourth state this year to approve a so-called “constitutional carry” law when Republican legislators overrode a veto by Democratic Gov. Jay Nixon on Sept. 15, making permitless carry legal. West Virginia, Mississippi and Idaho also have adopted constitutional carry laws in 2016, bringing the total number of such states to 12.

“States that focus on freedom realize that if self-defense truly is a natural-born right, and the Second Amendment truly affirms that natural-born right, you shouldn’t have to ask the government for permission to exercise it,” saidTim Schmidt, president of the U.S. Concealed Carry Association in West Bend, Wisconsin. “Kind of like you don’t have to ask the government to exercise the First Amendment.”

Missouri’s law specifies 17 places where people can’t carry guns, including churches, airports, sports arenas, courthouses, liquor stores, schools, hospitals and polling places on Election Day. It will take effect Jan. 1.

The Missouri chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, part of Michael Bloomberg’s Everytown for Gun Safety, objected that the legislature’s action “makes Missouri the first new ‘stand your ground’ state since Trayvon Martin’s death.”

With the notable exceptions of Maryland, New Jersey, New York, and California.

A “natural born” right?

I am very glad that those states are recognizing the true constitution and what the term inalienable rights (i.e., rights that cannot be repealed or restrained by human laws) means.

READ THE CONSTITUTION DEMOCRATS!

Not enough, but a step in the right direction. Using their own reasoning of natural born right, then it shall apply everywhere in the State, every square inch and on every floor of every building.

I carry because I love my wife and kids.

I'm not holding my breath for this to happen in Maryland, although we have some of the most dangerous municipalities in the nation, with more reason to carry than many.

I don't ask for permission

A man after my own heart. An armed society is a polite society. One thing is for sure, if everyone was armed crime would go way down.

5:55 either do i. I'm a damn felon and can't own a gun and never had a violent charge or gun charge drugs etc... I'd rather be judged by 12 then carried by 6!

5:55 has it right.
What man thinks he gets has the authority to tell me which rights GOD gave me that he will ALLOW me to use? That I need his PERMISSION???
Puffed up, self important, egotistical, Nazi wanna-be's holding themselves to be superior to the rest of us.
Carry a gun all the time. To protect yourself against criminals. Or anyone who thinks they can take it.
Keep cheering.

This is one area that governor Hogan has disappointed. He still has time and I hope he works on this issue.

Kaine said they will make it much harder to purchase a pistol. So the states better act really fast because I'm scared of the stupidity of our great nation and who they vote for. CLINTON has so much DIRTY money and so POWERFUL.

You are not alone my friend. This restriction is relatively new, having started in the '30's I think. First with machine guns, then restriction on felons. (and misdemeanors is a year or more in jail is possible)

I am too old to go to jail and it would be ugly if a cop caught me with a gun.

Shouldn't have to obtain a permit to exercise my 2nd amendment right!

Hogan U want re-elected ?

Screw the Governor. You don't need "Permission" from anyone. Just carry and be ready.

Yeah let me know how that works out for you! 20 to life if used in shooting, if your white. Then deal with prison as a Caucasian. Money family life over.

so much for the "well regulated militia" part of the second amendment...

it's about survival. People had their weapons at their homes. When they came together then you had your militias. well regulated or otherwise.

The meaning of well regulated meant regular, like everyday person

Jury nullification.
Look it up and use it. Although it is absolutely legal, talk about it in court and the judge will shut you up IMMEDIATELY.
It is the last legal bastion for "we, the people".
If you shoot someone who is trying to strong arm you, rob you, assault you, I don't care if the gun is stolen, you are walking if I'm on the jury.
Cheer that.
