Subject: George Washington’s greatest sniper was an Irish marksman Timothy Murphy

Timothy Murphy was a rifleman and expert sniper in the American Revolutionary War. Some say he changed the course of the critical battle of Saratoga when he gunned down two British generals, at 300 yards.

At the Battle of Bemis Heights, the second Battle of Saratoga, on October 7, 1777, Murphy is reputed to have shot and killed Sir Francis Clerke and General Simon Fraser.

Relatively few details of Murphy's early life are known. He was born in 1751 near the Delaware Water Gap. His parents were Presbyterians from County Donegal, Ireland, who moved to Shamokin Flats (now Sunbury, PA) in 1759, when Murphy was eight years old, according to Wikipedia. A few years later, Murphy became an apprentice to a Mr. van Campen, and moved with the van Campen family to the Wyoming Valley, which was then the frontier.

One had to be really precise when loading those guns to achieve the perfect balance of gun powder and projectile.300 yards is pretty much the maximum distance nowadays to hit a man size target with a muzzle loader. Some will argue that, citing more or less, but in the 1700's 100 yards or less was the typical accuracy range.300 yards was unheard of.When a grave robber attempted to rob Nostradamus's grave he was hit by a stray bullet from over a mile away & killed.

Did Nostradamus predict that?

He predicted that the person who unearthed his body would die immediately thereafter. He also was found with a medallion that had been placed on his chest when he was initially buried that had the exact date he would be unearthed engraved on it.Creepy but true. The stray bullet that killed the grave robber was fired from app 1 mile away during a battle in the French Revolution.
