Dam now ill have no place to buy my meat and deli

Anonymous said...

Damn now me and my friends won't be able to loiter and sell drugs in front of the building. Smh.

Anonymous said...

Ugggghhhh. I drive from west ocean city for their deli, meats and produce. Food lion is mediocre at best and walmart is horrible.

JoeAlbero said...

You people need to look up HASTINGS in Delmar. If you want truly fresh meat, they're the best on the shore. I do not believe they have lunch meats but you might want to call them and ask.

Anonymous said...

Ain't unions grand?

Anonymous said...

The Amish market at Spences Bazaar in Dover too for meat and lunch meat and cheese.

Anonymous said...

I have to check Hastings out. The more I can purchase from a small business the better I like it.

Anonymous said...

ha ha ha the first thing to go in the ghetto is supermarkets
in most ghettos you buy your groceries at 7-11
First it was Acme, then Superfresh, and has anyone noticed how awful the Walmart in Fruitland is?? Most of the time the shelves are 1/2 empty. They will be next.

We will be left with Food Lion, hmmm isn't that the store that the main stream media did an expose' on where they were selling rotten outdated deli foods and such?

Anonymous said...

Hastings does have deli meat and cheese, not full variety as such in big box stores but great prices on them. Hastings always fresh!

Anonymous said...

Joe, what Salisbury needs is an Aldi's and Trader Joe's. Both grocers are owned by the same folks, and it'd fill a niche that is still missing here.

Anonymous said...

But Save-A-Lot is in the ghetto and its still there?

Anonymous said...

Giant awhile back outsourced their meat to a factory PA. Since then the meat is awful and often mislabeled since the workers in that factory speak little English.

Anonymous said...

The next shoe will drop when we find out what trash grocery chain has bought them.

Anonymous said...

Aldi's isn't owned by Trader Joes. Aldi's is a German company and it's very similar to Save A Lot's.

Anonymous said...

All the grocery stores get there meats from the same place. Smithfield, Cargill, Tyson's, JBS, Perdue, ConAgra, Hormel and a handful of other large meat companies. It doesn't matter whether you are getting it from Walmart, Food Lion or Harris Teeter, it all comes from the same place and it's all junk.

Anonymous said...

Great! Now where will I get my groceries? Food Lion prices are higher and Walmart just plain sucks! Guess I'm going to have to travel somewhere out of town for my groceries! I'm sure some piece of trash will take it over.

Anonymous said...

True!

Anonymous said...

Get most of my meats there-always fresh.

Kateri said...

This stinks! Looks like I'll be going to Hastings in Delmar for the butcher and to Jacks Market in Hebron for deli meats!. They're better anyway, just more out of the way. And all of those employees....a lot of which have been there for years and years and have made a career with them. Such a shame.

mommy13 said...

best place to buy meats, I wish they had better hours though, the place is packed on Saturday

Anonymous said...

I've starting shopping in Easton at Acme. I'm tired of the lack of selection here in Salisbury. I also make my monthly trip to Trader Joe's in Annapolis. I also look locally for meats and produce like Jack's market.
I think the lower eastern shore deserves better than what we are offered. I don't mind paying a little more for quality and service.
You don't get that from either Walmart, or Food Lion. At least Giant has good service, but not the best prices if you don't buy the store brand items.

Anonymous said...

I've got a suggestion for all of you, become a VEGAN.

Anonymous said...

Any idea as to when this is to take place?? How much longer will it be open???

Anonymous said...

Amen and amen. Aldi I think would have more people because of the lower price point. Ugh, I'm so disgusted that Giant is being sold.

Anonymous said...

4:17 veganism is not healthy.

Anonymous said...

Veganism is way healthier than eating rotting animal flesh. Many studies link meat consumption (particularly processed meats) to a higher risk of cancer and other diseases.

Will miss giant wallmart sucks

Anonymous said...

Thanks Mr. Albero. Although not pleased with this news. You have scooped the Local media again. WBOC has had 4 straight stories about Delaware, and WMDT is going to sports. What a joke.

Anonymous said...

I wish we would get a Wegmans.

Anonymous said...

I wish Harris Teeter would open a store on the Delaware side of Delmar. GREAT store and NO TAXES! Food lyon in Delmar wouldn't be able to compete.

Anonymous said...

Oh wegmans.... yes

Anonymous said...

So glad I moved. Easton has Harris Teeter coming too. Winnnnning

Anonymous said...

Good luck with that in that area

Anonymous said...

Salisbury could not sustain a Wegmans EVER! Much like a Whole Foods, its a rip off that most people would not go to. Trader Joe's would be perfect for two reasons. It is a high quality, low overheard store with well paid employees and their food prices are still far cheaper than anything we have in town beyond the Ghetto Save A Lot. The University, local students, Perdue folks, and Hospital professionals would all help sustain the business. The problem seems to be one of distribution patterns...as there is NOTHING around to entice a company to invest that much money for something so out of the way from their major supply lines.

Wish away! Giant is being sold, not closed.

So sad. I have lived here for 26 years and it was always my store.

Anonymous said...

Foreign companies buying America and american companies moving overseas, we need Trump now.

I don't understand the comment made about Giant needing better hours. Other than possibly being open 24 hours a day, what's wrong with the hours there?

I truly don't understand the comment made about Giant needing better hours. Other than possibly being open 24 hours a day, what' wrong with their hours?!?! I'm confused.

Anonymous said...

Try to get a Publix supermarket in Salisbury. They are moving north and will soon open in the Richmond area. Everyone loves Publix!

Steve said...

Looks like Hastings will have more customers coming! Need work? Apply there!

Anonymous said...

The unions are killing the store. You can't pay those wages on grocery margins. Especially from the wages paid around here.

Unknown said...

A Whole Foods Store would be excellent!

Anonymous said...

Giant has awesome employees. They are much friendlier and more helpful than anyone at Food Lion or Walmart.

Anonymous said...

Union had nothing to do with it being sold, pay attention ....FTC judge ruled that due to parent company ahold and food lion parent company delhaise merger, they cannot hold monopoly on grocery business in area. Two real options, Acme jumps on it or Shop Rite. Acme most likely scenario, it fits the current style and they are very aggressively spending money.

Anonymous said...

Um...Aldi and T.J's ARE owned by the same company....it's a known fact outside of the 'bury. With that said, the local fish wrap (newspaper) did a story a few years back on how T.J's, Wegman's or even Harris Teeter would NEVER come to the 'bury. The demographics are just not there.

Think about it.....Let's say Wegman's would open a store some where in the 'bury....sure it would be busy at first. But, once the newness is over, you would have the "anti-chain, buy local" people pissing and moaning that the store would be driving out the little guy. The ghetto dweller would never be able to afford the store (let's see how many $1000/lb truffles (not chocolates either) they would sell). Within two years, the store would close and then the same people who would be pissing and moaning about the store forcing out the local store would now have something new to moan about. I have seen it and read it way too many times.

Aldi, would be the only one that would have a slight chance of be successful. But, I wouldn't hold my breath for it to come here (who is still holding their breath for Cracker Barrel??????). Face it folks...the store will be sold off to some no-name company (Frugal Hoosier maybe ($5 for anyone who gets the reference)).

Anonymous said...

Love Publix!!

Anonymous said...

Publix or Harris Teeter, YES.

Anonymous said...

Love Hastings!

Anonymous said...

I understand that Food Lion and Giant parent companies are merging. What I don't understand is why they would close the better of the two stores. In the newspaper article dated June 2015, it clearly stated that when a Giant Food and a Food Lion store were in close proximity of one another, it would be the Food Lion that closed. I would have no problem whatsoever if Food Lion closed. Their selection sucks. Walmart is even worse. Giant in N. Salisbury was the only place I could get my uncured meats that were low in sodium and they had the best produce selection around. I hope and pray this is not so.

Anonymous said...

Safeway is also possible. They have a very large division based on Maryland

Anonymous said...

Why don't they sell the food lions

Tidewaterbound said...

Yes, Giant and Food Lion are owned by the same. And Food Lion on Tilghman Road is wonderful--great staff and best you can find save going to Hastings butcher.

Anonymous said...

Food Lion in Princess Anne is terrible and Nanticoke Road is not much better. The poor quality of their food is only surpassed by the people who work there for the wages they pay. They don't carry many of the items I want. Fruit at Fruitland Walmart was rotten both times I shopped there. I'll guess I'll move to Annapolis. I will feel sorry for the great employees at Giant. I've been shopping there 35 years.

Anonymous said...

Tidewaterbound - Could not disagree more. Have shopped Food Lion in several states, before the Delmar store was the most northern store. Been in stores in DE, MD, VA, & NC. Live less than two miles from the Tilghman Road store. Because it is so dirty, the employees so rude, the selection so poor, and nothing about shopping there is positive, I refuse to go there. While Snow Hill Road, Delmar, & Pecan Square are OK, none comes close to the quality of those in Tidewater VA or northeastern NC. Of the dozen and a half or more that I've shopped, Tilghman Road is absolutely the worst.

Anonymous said...

To my knowledge, Giant was not sold. It merged with a Dutch company who owns the Food Lion chain. This transaction took place in 2015. I doubt if there will be any changes. People here on the Shore could not sustain a store such as Wegmans or Whole Foods. The food sophistication does not exist in this area. When Whole Foods did a demographic study of this area, that is exactly what they found. Hence the overflow of Food Lion stores and WalMarts. These stores are stocked with the foods popular in this area. If you visit a Wal Mart say in the Northern Virginia area outside of Washington, DC, it's like a Gucci WalMart. Not only are the employees well spoken and knowledgeable, well dressed and professionally groomed, the selection is much broader and on the high end. You are on the Eastern Shore. Look around you. Enough said.

Anonymous said...

I hope they stay open-its the only store around the lower shore that has a huge selection of stuff other stores do not carry and their meat, produce, deli and bakery are top of the line.We also like it because it has an entire section of the store with organic products.Food Lion pales in comparison and everywhere they go they close down other grocers. It's like a monopoly.I sure wish we had an Aldi's and a Wegmans here.

Anonymous said...

Giant , all things must come to an end , bye now , most expensive store bites the dust .

Anonymous said...

131-Aldi's and Trader Joe's are owned by the same people. Feel free to look it up.

Anonymous said...

5:31 giant most expensive? guess you have never been in a food lion.
All I can say is go to the Berlin Walmart. Puts ours to shame and worth the trip.

Anonymous said...

I've been shopping there since I was in Nsg. school, when it was built in the early 60 s. My roommate's husband was store manager. I
bought everything I needed for my upcoming delivery. Onesies, diapers, bottles, blankets. a little each week as I did grocery shopping. Even furniture. A couple chairs just recently discarded. I try not to use the self checkout so the cashiers will keep their jobs. Hopefully the new owners will maintain the high standards which is known as giant food. Btw, I've been to one of those "gucci" giant stores and they're fantastic! If we had one, I wouldn't complain. Best wishes & good luck.

Anonymous said...

If I have to shop at Food Lion, I go to the one in Fruitland, the cleanest and best one around here.

Anonymous said...

9:05 is correct. It seems to be the cleanest and best run store around. The shelves are always fully stocked and the customer service is very good!

Anonymous said...

Unfortunately you are correct.

Anonymous said...

Unfortunately, in your dreams.

Anonymous said...

I remember about 40 ??? years ago I was concerned about Food Lyon and Walmart and asked our union rep way nothing was being do about these non-union stores on the Eastern Shore and was told. "Don't worry about them, they won't last. Nothing was done until they started opening them on holy ground in Baltimore city and county. It has always made me think, just how many pay checks was he getting every month

Anonymous said...

Look at Super Fresh, some of those laid employees are still looking or work. My brother was one of them and now works for 10 dollars are hour for Giant. Where was the food and commercial workers union to help these employees? I didn't give a crap for them. They certainly got their union dues and empty promises! Food Lion is like the Walmart of grocery stores. Low wages and no benefits! It shows in the customer service you receive.

Anonymous said...

Giant has been owned by a Dutch company for over 20 years. The store won't be leaving, just changing ownership. Places like Columbia, MD may see their stores close, where they have to compete with Wegman's, Whole Foods, Trader Joe's and others. The Salisbury Giant holds its own in the limited competition.

Anonymous said...

Don't by beef at Food Lion. It's not what they say it is. They will sell you sirloin and call it rib eye.

Anonymous said...

I basically use the same shopping list on a regular basis, and I also price check. I don't find Giant's prices on items also found in Walmarts and Food Lions to be "so much higher" as some have stated. You want quality, you pay for quality so I really don't mind paying more for some produce items. HOWEVER, you can't beat Giant's sales. It seems I get angry every time I walk into a Walmart or Food Lion because of the quality of items/the lack of items/the price per pound of items/the friendliness of employees. I prefer Giant on so many different levels, so call me a snob. At least I know the food I put on the table for my family won't look like it's been sitting on the counter for days in the heat and humidity when I serve it.

Anonymous said...

6:42
No you are not a snob. I totally agree with you. I also try to buy quality products for my family. That is why I travel to Easton and Annapolis to shop. BJ'S warehouse also has some good quality meats and produce. I go to food lion if I need something in a hurry and it is at the Fruitland Food Lion. The lower Eastern shore needs more choice in grocery stores.

We used to have a Safeway and an Acme here in Salisbury. I was very sorry to see them go. Superfresh not so much!

Anonymous said...

If the Fruitland Food Lion is best, that's pretty sad for the customers. It would be nice if they could open more than 2 check out lines at a time. There is always a wait even if I'm there for just a few things. And I've never been impressed by the employees.

Anonymous said...

No, they are separate companies- Aldi Nord and Aldi SĂĽd. Feel free to ACTUALLY look something up.

Anonymous said...

Why don't they just rename all their stores to Super Foods or Giant lions...or similar. Then they could keep them all.

Anonymous said...

At one time, Salisbury used to have Acme, Safeway, Superfresh, and Pantry Pride. Now all we will have will be Food Lion and Walmart.
I think city and county council of Wicomico county can do better. A city this size should have more options in where to buy our groceries.
It definitely is a quality of life issue! This will not be good for the chamber of commerce or the local realtors.
Who the hell would want to live here? Is it right that we have to leave the area to find other places and selection like Annapolis, or Easton? Hope the Mayor and County government are reading this!

Anonymous said...

Actually Giant is more expensive even on the most basic items.
Yogurt at giant 1.20
Same yogurt at walmart 1.00

Do that for a year and you have paid an extra 72.80 a year.
I would rather have that in my pocket than give it to giant.

Looks like March 17, 2016 at 6:42 PM is not a very good price checker or has deep pockets.

Anonymous said...

I agree. Love aldi's

Anonymous said...

truth be told salisbury sucks for getting anything other than illegal drugs. the restaurants here are mediocre at best. other then giant all the food stores suck. thank God for the internet. otherwise I don't know how I would've managed living in this podunk town for so long.
close to the beach that's all salisbury has going for it!
and thanks for telling everybody about hastings. Hopefully they don't take food stamps!

Anonymous said...

What about the pharmacy?

Anonymous said...

7:01 - Shop both stores now, Giant more often since using the SavingsCatcher from Wal-Mart. A number of items have earned money because they were cheaper at Giant. On a number of store brand items Food Lion is the most expensive, Giant the least. Haven't found Giant expensive at all, just pay more attention comparison shopping.

Anonymous said...

I eat what I grow. I save 400 a month for 5 years now. People stop taking the PILL and get out of the MATRIX.

Anonymous said...

hastings is fantastic, outstanding steaks hamburger and bacon

Anonymous said...

Two reasons I shop at Giant.....great employees, and good food. It weird how the best food store has union employees that actually care about their job.....maybe because they actually have a vested interest in their company.

Anonymous said...

I heard late last week in DC that Giant Food would be sold the opposite was the concern up there with Food Lion worried they be closed because of the merger. It would be nice to get the Europeans out of both our welfare system and Food supply and get some American ownership of our chain supermarkets

Anonymous said...

We get the leftovers here in Salisbury, probably Save a lot will buy them.

Anonymous said...

Giant also is the only place that doubles coupons up to $1 and takes competitors coupons. I was in a Food Lion yesterday just to compare. If Giant does close, Food Lion and Walmart will be 1. overwhelmed with more customers and 2. there is no way they can stock enough for that many more customers coming to their stores. There is no room for it. Lines will be backed up down the aisles.

Anonymous said...

Just another nail in the Salisbury/Wicomico coffin

Anonymous said...

In the end all of you will go where you can buy whatever it is you buy for the cheapest price. You throw in the names of stores you would like to come to town, but the economy won't justify it.We are in a very basic grocery buying dynamic and an ounce of research by potential buyers will eliminate the high end stores from consideration.

Anonymous said...

I'm even more interested in getting the Mexicans and Africans out of our welfare system. European immigrants are relatively rare at this point, and more likely to work for their keep.

Anonymous said...

Exactly. They pay them enough to care about their job, and the customers, and it shows.

Anonymous said...

I'm a little late on this issue , but here goes:
Sunday 3/20/2016 my wife and I went to giant so we could pick up a few items. We have been going to walmart and food lion because of prices. Anyway , we purchased some apples and some oranges , they were in terrible condition when we washed them at home , they were half rotten and bruised , couldn't noticed this as they were bagged in the store . We also noticed that the produce section was not like I remembered it , fresh , neat , orderly and easy to find items .
Now we know where not to go.

Anonymous said...

What about the prepared food section? What will happen with the chef who makes the food? I love his food!

Anonymous said...

To my knowledge, you're a snob and Giant will be sold.
