Vanishing Ocean City With Bunk Mann

Vanishing Ocean City With Bunk Mann
Posted by DispatchAdmin

The English Diner opened in 1939 on the corner of Wicomico Street and Baltimore Avenue. Moved to 21st Street and Philadelphia Avenue in the last 1950s, it was one of Ocean City’s most popular family restaurants.

It was known as “Little City Hall” for the daily breakfast gatherings of Ocean City’s political elite during the years that Hugh Cropper, Harry Kelley and Roland “Fish” Powell served as mayors.

The English Diner was demolished in November 2005 and the Mariner’s Watch condominium was built on the site the following year.

The Ocean city up til the 80's was an awesome place now not so much such a shame it was a fun safe place for everyone.

My great grandfather founded Englishes and he inspires me to do the same thing. I'm going to do it bigger than he did by the time it's all said and over with. Thanks for the genes James Hilton English.

There's a couple of things wrong with that story (above):
1. The diner did not move from the original location at Wicomico St. and Baltimore Ave. until either 1965 or 1966 (certainly NOT in the "50's").
2. City Lunch was more of a breakfast gathering of the Town Council than English Diner ever was. It was also pretty much the headquarters during major storms. The Council; police; fire... All there during the crisis.
Prisoner meals were purchased daily from City Lunch. (Apple Butter sandwiches!)
Please correct me if I'm wrong on either point!
One more thing (unrelated to the errors): English Diner had an AWESOME "French Apple Pie" at the counter, something I still crave to this day. City Lunch had - even to this day - the best pancakes ever served anywhere!
