Growth in ‘coolest’ town undeniable

Last year, a majority of the headlines in Berlin centered on its “Coolest Small Town” designation, to the point where the Gazette considered a temporary moratorium on the dreaded “c-word.”

Growth in the small town has been undeniable, however, and that trend continued throughout 2015, when change came in both small and large doses.

Several new businesses opened doors in and around Main Street, considered the hotbed of commerce in Berlin, including new restaurants at the north (Leaky Pete’s) and south (Crush ‘n Crab) ends. In between, a new fine arts gallery, Art in the Fields, opened with an exhibition featuring legendary pop artist Andy Warhol.

On the outskirts of town, Rinnier Development Company introduced plans for Oceans East, a major new housing complex with potentially 700-plus units on Seahawk Road, near Stephen Decatur High School.

Berlin annexed the property in March, although a text amendment battle over just how wide each building of the complex could be continued into November, when a 3-1 vote decided to set the magic number at 36 units – at maximum – with future discretion given to the town’s planning commission.

Typical eastern shore mentality....calling a couple of new resturants and some apartments growth.....you people don't have a clue as to what real growth is....having left the shore 2 plus years ago for swfl I can tell you if you want real growth that will blow your mind drive around Naples. Sure it's not apples to apples in many ways but this town covers the same area as Wicomico and Worcester counties but 30 years ago less than 50k pepole called naples home. Now 300k plus call it home and it's growing at every turn. The shore has declined over the same period and will continue....the area doesn't have the people to support any growth....growth depends on real jobs...not eateries and apartments...in town we have just opened the 5th hospital, yet I still run into friends at one of our 7 publix food stores...huge town with small town feel...that's growh.

>>>Typical eastern shore mentality.<<< So, why do you spend all of your time trolling an ES-based blog, blubbering about the wonders of your new home?? I've lived in 'swfl'. Outside of the gated communities, it ain't all that.

Wow. Andy Warhol is still alive? And he came to Berlin? Seriously cool.

When the music festival comes around, what assumed-to-be-dead recording artists can we expect?

Here's the big question I have. Where are the people who will fill 700 units coming from? Section 8 housing or is there some huge factory being built we don't know about? Section 8 would seem right because it would be on the outskirts of town, far away from the nice downtown area.

Meanwhile, folks I've talked to in Salisbury who have got their tax assessment notices said their home values went down 4% to 12%.

Laura Mitchell going to hike those tax rates to get her "constant yield" so she can travel and eat.
