Bag Tax/Fee Coming To Maryland........

A 10 cent fee/tax will be charged on each paper or plastic disposable bag, 5-7 cents will be kept by the store.

I would suggest everyone start calling and sending emails now about this.  We all know once we start paying a tax/fee it never goes away it only goes up in price.  Click HERE to see a list of all Senators in Maryland. You can click on their name to get their contact information.

No problem, I can shop in Delmar DE, or Laurel, or drive To BJ's Wholesale Warehouse in Selbyville DE to do my grocery shopping. Since I live near the DE border, not an issue. This state seems to go out of its way to charge unreasonable taxes and fees on it's citizens. Can't wait until I reach retirement age, so I can leave this state for good! I buy my beer and alcohol in DE as well because of this!

we are starting to be more like Colorado all the time. They charge per bag. Now lets approve recreational!

I have cloth bags and am much happier, I grab one a week free to use for trash

This was enacted by the garbage bag lobbyists. They have been complaining for years how people are reusing these free bags for trash bags, effecting their profits.

The joke is, we already pay for the price of these bags since it is buried in the food costs just like labor and freight costs are. Therefore we will be charged TWICE for the same product.

In the future will I have to pay an extra fee/tax to use a cashier instead of the self check out?

Take your own bag - no fee. I take a 5 gal bucket to the store. Put groceries in it, take to register and they put groceries back in it. You can put 5 of them in most shopping carts.

They are going to be charging for the paper bags as well it looks like. The only solution is to use the reusable ones. I'm fine with that until something gets spilled in one of them. Even cleaning them out doesn't always work.

I think this a great idea. I don't mind paying the extra fee It will keep our environment cleaner in the long run!

The road the hell is paved with good intentions!
I'll bet the money won't go for what it is intended.
Remember, the lottery was supposed to go to the schools, and the bridge tolls were supposed to be only temporary when the Chesapeake Bay Bridge was built!!
Once a tax or fee is enacted, it is seldom taken away.
The devil is always in the details!
When has the state or federal government ever used tax money for what it was intended?

washing those cloth bags in a stream with pounding rocks?

They found something they haven't taxed. 10:38 is absolutely correct.

Those costs are figured into the price of groceries.
Your stupid leaders think YOU are stupid, too.
Start the hanging. Or,
Keep cheering.

10:38, the answer to your question is yes. There are already plans by most major retailers to force us into using the "self" checkout lane. They never work right and I refuse to use them. Besides it puts one more person out of a job, albeit low paying.
Also while I too generally use my own bags (if they get dirty wipe with a Clorox wipe), I have to agree with Joe that this is just another money making scheme.

Montgomery County has been charging for plastic bags for a few years.

11:43 really? I would do a bit more research before believing that statement. I would like proof that charging people for a bag improves the environment.

guess you could just keep your plastic bags and reuse them... I save mine to use in small trash cans and carry lunch to work... Would the grocery stores let you bring your own bags back? I would think so

It appears history is beginning to repeat itself once again. The American Revolution began because of taxation issues between the colonists and King George. Now, the Federal Government has taken Georgie's place and citizens, once again, are at odds over taxation.

Here's a thought: If they really want to be green, then why not make reusable bags FREE and cease making plastic/paper bags altogether so there's not other option?

PS: If paper was really an issue, then why not slap a surcharge on every piece of paper used to generate these bills and documents in DC - they use a lot more paper than all the grocery stores in the world for their senseless, unread hogwash.

Please. Your federal, state and local taxes is enough. And, let's talk about the generous charitable donations you make throughout the year. This tax a bag is just another way to get money you need more from you to put in their pockets. EVERYONE need to carry their own bags. STOP giving these GREEDY ace people your hard earned taxable money. We are being taxed for EVERYTHING. STOP making so easy for the already rich companies and business organizations.
