UPS Having Trouble Handling Holiday Avalanche Of Online Orders

We already know UPS is renting additional vehicles to help with the onslaught of holiday deliveries, but it seems that’s not enough to help the company stay ahead of the avalanche of online orders this time of year.

United Parcel Service is facing more holiday volume than it was expecting because everyone likes shopping online for the holidays, reports The Wall Street Journal, which could have a big impact on the season: according to an analysis of millions of packages by software developer ShipMatrix Inc, on-time delivery rates for UPS ground packages based on their usual shipping transit times last week fell to 91%, compared to an on-time rate of 97% during the same week last year.

(UPS isn’t alone in slowing down, however, as FedEx’s early numbers were lower than usual at around 95% on-time rate, the WSJ points out).

Some sources in the know tell the WSJ that UPS is being dragged under the waves by unexpectedly high volumes, high pickups and just not enough people and equipment to get the job done in some locations.

“Volumes are coming in much higher than planned,” John Haber, CEO of Spend Management Experts, which advises retailers on shipping matters told the WSJ. “You can only process so much volume so quickly.”

Ah yes, we are dealing with this issue right now. Have a small business on Rt. 13 and 90%+ of the time we get our deliveries between 9 and 12, lunchtime the latest. Two shipments coming in were tracked to be here yesterday but by 9p.m. they still weren't delivered and were rescheduled for today. Will they be delivered today? Good question. Fortunately, these are not critical items so if they don't get delivered and just ride around in the truck every day all over Delmarva, that is fine. Would deliveries not dropped off the day before have priority? Anyone know?

We to run a business on Rt 13, and have had a few cases of packages arrive in Salisbury before 7am, and then at like 3:30pm in the afternoon they are scanned as "business closed, will attempt next business day" we are open until 5:30pm and never close during the day.

You can tell this is just the warehouse lying as it never shows being scanned as put on the truck for delivery. It's just their way of making their numbers look good, as if they scan that way, it makes it look like my fault and that they "tried to deliver", when if fact, they didn't even attempt.

Unfortunately UPS has gotten bad locally, as I don't get my ground packages usually during non holiday until 4:30 in the afternoon, so I lose a whole day of work on getting my customers their orders/repairs done. Fedex Ground is here bright and early at 8:30am every morning without fail.

10:57, I'm 9:36.

I agree with what you are saying about "business closed." We as well, have had the same issue. Our lights are on, people are here throughout the day and the door unlocked, but come 6p.m. we check the tracking and shows "business closed, will attempt next business day." As far as the current two packages I am waiting on that were to be delivered yesterday, as of 9p.m. last night, only one had a message "Due to operating conditions, your package may be delayed. Delivery will be rescheduled." Currently, they still show "out for delivery." The saga continues....

It's 9:36 again with an update. Yesterday I placed an order with Amazon and I guess with the close distribution center they have, Amazon quickly shipped the package and it now shows that UPS is to deliver it today. So that makes 3 packages on the truck, with a fourth tomorrow (just in case they do not deliver today.) The saga continues....

That's OK if they are a little late. I'd much rather have UPS deliver to us than those people that Fed Ex contracts with. They don't know how to back out of a driveway without tearing up your yard.

Well, the saga ends. Got the 3 packages just this minute. Different driver so that may explain some things.

And so the saga ends. UPS just delivered the 3 packages. Different driver so that may be the key.
