Before you go blaming this on anyone or anything local, the one in Rehoboth is closing too. Bunch of them are closing nationally.

The large grocery stores are suffering , many will close in 2016 according to the Obama plan. Walmart and Sams will prosper by the closings.
Also I will mention that the Mom and Pop stores are on the rise for some reason. This is a good thing . According to my calculations the small stores like 7-11 , shore stop , and etc. will gain in popularity as the muslims take hold of the country , after all , these stores are government funded . They may not be our government , but believe me they are funded by the middle east.
The black population , who favor the Islam religion will rise in popularity , as Sams club is the best example. I don't believe any executive is worth 5 million a year , unless she can crap gold.

They did not close it because it was making too much money. There is a Giant and WalMart five minutes away.

3:51 and increasingly suffering economy is the reason. No blame to place. Just financial conditions nationally that cause people to be more frugal. We have no choice. Super Fresh has always been more expensive. People may argue that the vegetable quality was better, etc., but as the money gets harder to come by, people are forced to compromise their standards. Most are wiling to compromise the quality of their food in order to have enough to eat. They have already done everything they can to cut everything else....heat, A/C, smmaller cars, shopping at Good Will, buying cheaper Chinese products from walmart, everything. The closing of Super Fresh is the next natural progression of things. We should get used to it.

quality is a thing of the past, its all about survival now

I wish there was a Giant five minutes from West O. I would be there all the time.

I live in west Ocean City and have shopped at that Super Fresh for the last 20 years. Their meats, produce and selection was always better than Food Lion. About 5 years ago I noticed they started slipping. Sometimes you would go and there would be no chicken or ground beef and their produce section started to dwindle. Now I'm left with Food Lion....which is fine for basic stuff....but it's not great. I have been going to Giant in Salisbury once a week to supplement (although it's usually a madhouse their selection is great!). I would give anything for a Giant, Harris Teeter or Safeway in West O!

The true reason it closed is A&P, which is the parent company of Super Fresh, Waldbaums, Food Emporium, Food Basics, and Pathmark, filed a second bankruptcy within 5 years. All stores were put up for bids. The ones that did not get sold unfortunately were closed. As far as local the one on 94th street in Ocean City, and the Rehoboth store were bought by Acme. Acme also bought other stores in Delaware, and Pennsylvania, and a Giant subsidiary named Stop & Shop bought numerous stores in New Jersey and New York. Bottom line is that A&P, which was one of the oldest chains around no longer exists.

9:15 You act as if the Republicans are giving us anything better. Step out of your political box, take off the blinders and realize that ALL elected officials are screwing you.

Democrat taxation.

Acme probably would've bought that store too but Tanger raised the rent. They don't really want a grocery story in the outlets.

8:19 AM, I would also love to see a Publix around here, I've wished for one for so long. Also would love to see a Harris Teeter.

all their food comes from the same place, just different labels on it lol

1:26. In the winter it's about a 25-30 minute drive from west Ocean City. In the summer it's just not practical to drive there.

You maybe right. I vote all the time and still see the same politicians in office.

Anonymous said...

I wish they would put Acme there. Does anyone know what might go there now??

Anonymous said...

Here's what I heard. Maybe someone can confirm. I heard their lease was up and Tanger outlets didn't renew because they don't have or want grocery stores in their shopping centers.

We will survive and look forward to 2016.

Sorry, I should have been more clear. When I said there was no blame to place I was referring to the corporations. They are making decisions necessary to keep the company alive as a whole. Yes the condition of the economy is responsible for these closings and that lies on the shoulders of the tax and spend dems. On local, state, and federal levels.
