Man with toy gun killed by Baltimore cop. Should toy guns be illegal?

An off-duty Baltimore cop shot and killed a suspected armed robber who was brandishing a toy gun. Amid national debate over US gun laws, some think banning fake guns is a no-brainer.

An off-duty Baltimore policeman on Saturday shot and killed a man he says appeared to be holding him at gunpoint in the suburbs of Linthicum Heights.

But when Anne Arudnel County detectives surveyed the crime scene, they realized the would-be robber was wielding a toy gun.

“It appears that this is a robbery gone wrong and the officer fired in self-defense,” Anne Arundel Police Lt. Ryan Frashure told WJZ News. “No officer wants to kill anybody much less use his service weapon if he doesn’t have to. This was just an unfortunate series of events.”

Toy or not the thug should not been trying to rob in the first place.

Toy guns should not look like real guns. Florescent orange would be good. In addition, modifying a toy gun to look like a real gun should be a crime. If you do it anyway and get killed, you got what you deserved!

Banning toy guns is a type of ban on 1st. Amendment rights. Owning and brandishing a toy is a form of expression, and this is a type of speech.

The robber had every intention of making his 'toy' gun look like the real thing. To top that off he intended for the police officer to think that the gun was real. Then he didn't obey the officers orders and made the officer fear for his life which in turn caused him to lose his life. Now what part of this is the 'toy' guns problem. We grew up in an age where we all had toy guns. You were told not to point them in anyone's face, etc. I would say this guy got what he deserved. (I also feel that all toy guns should have a distinct color on the tip of the barrel that no real gun manufacturer can ever copy.) Case closed.

moral is if you pull a gun I will assume it is real. Do not pull a gun if you are not going to use it. That is firearms 101. This guy should have been shot like he was. I do not fault the cop for this.

If one would like to express one's desire to be dead, go right ahead and brandish that toy gun in public. After San Bernardino, I don't think there's going to be much sympathy for anyone waving around a gun, even a "fake" one.

I had all kinds of play guns when i was a kid....52 years ago. beebee guns with CO2 cartriges, cap guns, pop guns, (which my grand dad loved as he picked ornaments off the Christmas tree till my mom took it away!), and the most infamous one i loved..."the Monkey Gun" that had like 9 different ways to shoot bullets to grenades. it was a blast. had a tank, was really large that shot bullets with powder. cool!
and no it wasn't all guns. still have my HO trains 53 years later. was looking at them last week.

Moral of story: don't bring a toy gun to a gun fight...doofus

A while back when the feds required a "Red Tip" to be put of guns to show they were toys, killers were painting their gun tips red to get the drop on cops hesitating to shot someone with a toy gun. The only reason these cops are alive today in because they wore a vest. Moral of the story, pull anything looking like a gun, you get shot.

When I was a kid you couldn't buy real looking guns. Reason is obvious. I had real fake looking cap guns and if I pointed at anyone my dad would have probably made my life very difficult to say the least. But then again I didn't have opionin until I could pay my own bills unlike these days.

No, just make entire toy gun Orange. And hold parents responsible for children who alter the toy or point at police.

No Idiots should be illegal. You point any type of gun at a cop and you deserve to die.

Who offered that stupid question anyway!
