Maryland crab shortage leads to hike in prices

KENT NARROWS, Md. (WJLA) - An early season shortage of blue crabs Is driving up the cost of the popular seafood. A bushel of crabs is averaging $50-$60 more wholesale now than at this time in 2014.

A visit Monday to the Waterman's Marina on Kent Island found many workboats sitting idle in their slips.

Crabber Harry Davidson said the reason is simple, "there's aren't any crabs." Davidson said he's been out on the water in the heat working hard chasing crabs without much success. He said ,"I'm trying to get a bushel everyday. I haven’t had two bushels yet this year. I expected at least three or four."

Thank you. I thought I was the only one that heard there was an abundance of crabs not long ago. Now there is a shortage? They might get top dollar from some tourons but it won't be from me.

Happens every year around this time. Watch the prices drop and the shortage go away after the 4th. Of July.

This happens every year, folks! Remember? They sit at the dock and say they aren't catching anything? Try driving the boat away from the dock!. Just a ploy to keep prices high. $300/ bushel?

I'll get some traps of my own and beat that price any day right on the shoreline!

I haven't seen any shortage, and still buying MD #2's for $50/bushel, caught and steamed same day. And my pots have been full and plentiful. False hype to manipulate market price for the lazy.

Everyone whines about the cost of crabs. A pound of lump crabmeat is less than $20. It makes 4 quarter pound crab cakes at <$5.00 per sandwich. A medium arby's roast beef sandwich with tax is almost $5.00. Make some potato salad and 6 ears of corn and I can feed a family of four a crab cake dinner for less than $25. How much is a KFC family bucket?
