ACLU: Squalid Conditions At Troubled Baltimore Jail

Moldy showers and cells are infested with mice and cockroaches, toilets are broken for days and medical care is poor or nonexistent at a notoriously troubled Baltimore city detention center, the ACLU and Public Justice Center said in court documents filed Tuesday.

The groups want a federal judge to reopen a lawsuit against the state of Maryland over what they say are conditions so substandard it brings "shame to this city." Inmates suffering from serious illnesses such as HIV and diabetes are being denied life-sustaining prescription medication and the state has failed to cure well-documented systemic problems within the jail after entering into a 2007 agreement with the U.S. Department of Justice, the court documents said.

"The conditions at the jail are a menace to the Constitution and to the public's health," said David Fathi, director of the ACLU's National Prison Project.

What I find suspect is that all this comes out soon after Governor Hogan takes office. These policies are the direct result of liberals running this state. Make no mistake.

I believe they are going to try to start pointing a finger and blaming Hogan. Just like Obama constantly does with Bush. They never take responsibility for their failures.

I hope Marylanders understand this. It would open the door completely for a two party state. With that we can prosper.

Many of the inmates in that jail are a menace to the public's health.

And this is where stupid Rev. Jamaal wants juvenile offenders held, rather than bidding a new facility to put them in.

If you don't like the conditions in jail don't do anything illegal and you won't have to worry about it.

Many inmates in that jail are not guilty and are awaiting trial but cannot afford bail

They probably will plead guilty to anything in order to get out of that place ASAP though

The conditions are far worse for our nations homeless Vets, but what is being done to fix that?

keeping treating them like crap and how do you think they will act when they are ultimately released? be happy? live the straight and narrow? or be worse than when they went in?

9:36 is correct. This is the jail that been deplorable for years and the state took it over under the O'malley era. Nothing was done under O'malley to fix the situation and it deteriorated even more. This is the same jail that was involved in the scandal when O'malley was governor where guards became pregnant by inmates and the black guerrilla family was running the place.

No. Stop being an apologist. The majority were juvenile offenders who never spent a day in that facility or any other adult facility for that matter.

Seven years does seem like a reasonable time to get things right. The O'Malley group didn't seem to give a damn, though.

1239 you really need to spend 3 months in one of these hotels. Right now your brain can't comprehend or imagine what happens in them. It's a war. Join a gang or be beaten, starved or much worse. To get in the gang you will have to do the same or worse.
