States move to restrict items eligible for food stamp purchases

WASHINGTON – In the long-running campaign by Republican-led states to rein in food stamp abuses and curb the now-$74 billion program, lawmakers are trying a new approach: Restricting what foods can and can't be on a family's grocery list.

The move is controversial, with critics accusing GOP lawmakers of playing food police to further burden people already struggling.

But proponents say the idea is not to punish people -- but promote healthy lifestyles by curbing the junk food they're buying with the government's help.

“It’s not meant to shame anyone or be punitive," Wisconsin state Rep. Robert Brooks said.

Doesn't matter when business' cash them out at 50%. They get whatever they want then.

This used to be done until the liberals started crying give them more. That is when certain foods you could and could not purchased changed. And not for the better.

It's about time.

They have no incentive to make healthy, cost conscious choices, and that's one reason they haven't learned this basic life skill.

Everyone should be ashamed about being on the dole when they're able to make a living on their own!

The generational welfare parasites aren't ashamed, why should they be? Their "leaders" indoctrinate them from birth that they aren't able to make a living on their own because of whitey, and that's why they must fervently cling to the system of government that promises to take care of them.

It's time to be weaned.
