To enhance safety for the estimated 28,000 to 36,000 motorists on US 50 between US 13 in Wicomico County and MD 90 in Worcester County, the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) is requiring 24-hour headlight use for all vehicles. SHA recently installed signs that will alert drivers to turn on headlights when traveling the corridor beginning Thursday, May 21.
“There have been tragic crashes along this corridor during the last decade. The mandatory headlight use will improve visibility of vehicles for drivers traveling the opposite direction,” said District Engineer Donnie Drewer. “The headlight use on MD 90 has made a difference and we expect the same positive outcome on this corridor.”
At the request of the community, SHA engineers evaluated this segment of US 50 and decided to designate it as a “safety improvement zone.” The designation meets national standards for daytime headlight use on highways.

Um you don't see oncoming traffic when traveling down Rt. 50 from the 13 by pass to Rt. 90. There are trees that completely block any view of the other side of the highway. Besides even if you could see the other side they are completely separate roads.
I understand how this works for Rt. 90 because there is only one lane each way and the headlights could prevent a collision.
I really believe this just gives the state another reason to pull someone over to either gain extra cash from fines or to have an excuse to search people for any other potential crimes.
90 is separated by guard rails. Lights didn't do any thing. Rt 50 isn't about head on crashes. Its about pulling out in front of people. It may help some. Doubt it. Most vehicles have day time lamps. Only thing fixing the rt 50 problem is natural selection.
Anything to save a life. Lots of vacationers with kids, etc. on their way to O.C.
I'm all for it. You see all the accidents at intersections. If it prevents one, it's worth it.
Donnie Drewer turned down Somerset County when they wanted to have mandatory headlights on Rt 413 between Westover and Crisfield, a much more dangerous road with 2 way traffic. I guess not too many people from Annapolis travel that road!
Yes, this works so well on 404 in DE! A lot of money could be made if they actually issued tickets. Good luck on rt. 50...

Donnie Drewer wants to eradicate some of the Crisfield/Somerset population. Or at least keep their numbers in check.

I have been driving a tractor trailer on 50 and 13 for the last 38 years so I feel qualified to offer my 2 cents to this post. Plain and simple it is inattentive driving habits that cause 99.9% of the accidents. I have to cover for some idiots every day I'm out there. All it is a way for the state to collect federal funds. Maryland brags about its involvement in the program and the feds dump money in the Maryland bank account for being in part of the program.
When the federal government says jump, Maryland says how high!!!
Yeah so the cops can see you coming better in order to pull you over.

I always use my lights; they are on when I leave the driveway as a proactive step.
But, this is a dumb idea as relates to actual safety. 4 lane divided highway. On 113 & 90 it made sense.
The rationale offered smells like what it is!
