Florida teen bit by shark vows to return to the beach and her track teammates

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. — Alysa Whetro, with her crutches nearby, watched reluctantly Wednesday as her Central Florida Gliders track team went through drills at Lake Brantley High School.

Despite her passion to compete, the 13-year-old student-athlete knew that her shredded Achilles tendon would prevent her from joining her teammates for a few months.

The cause of her injury?

A shark.

The encounter happened Sunday. Alysa was wading in waist-high water while body boarding at Cocoa Beach. As she waited to catch the next wave, she felt a searing pain on her left ankle.

Nonsense. She entered the water; their world. Not the other way around. It is a risk all swimmers are aware of and take.
