Traffic Stop Leads to Drug and Gun Arrest

Bethel - Delaware State Police have arrested a Laurel man after he was found to be in possession of a gun and drugs during a traffic stop yesterday afternoon.

The incident began on Friday, March 27, 2015 at approximately 1:20 p.m., as a Delaware State Trooper on routine patrol on Bethel Road west of Woodland Ferry Road, Bethel, observed a white Jeep with a loud muffler traveling in an eastbound direction. The trooper began to follow the vehicle, and as they reached the intersection of Woodland Ferry Road, the operator of the Jeep made a sudden U-turn in the middle of the intersection. The trooper then activated his emergency equipment and conducted a traffic stop of the Jeep.

The trooper then made contact with the operator of the vehicle, later identified as Garrett L. Hill, 21, of Laurel, DE, and while speaking to him he observed several knives inside of the vehicle, as well as inside of Hill’s wallet as he was retrieving his identification. Hill was then asked to exit the vehicle and upon conducting a pat down search of him, the trooper located two more knives. A subsequent search of the Jeep was conducted at which time the trooper located a fully loaded SAR 9mm handgun in between the driver’s seat and center console of the car. He also located a digital scale, 6.5 grams of marijuana, and rolling papers inside of the vehicle’s center console.

Garrett Hill was arrested and transported to Troop 5, Bridgeville, where he was charged with Carrying a Concealed Deadly Weapon, Possession of Marijuana, two counts of Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and Improper Turning of a Vehicle within an Intersection. He was arraigned by Justice of the Peace Court 2 and released on $6050.00 unsecured bail.

Far stretch for a traffic stop. Loud muffler in Delaware? Illegal u turn? Never heard of that. Last I knew a uturn is legal unless posted no uturns.

1:20 the way I see it pot is now legal in many states, he might have a ccw, and well I carry a knife every day.

Still sir. Judgment/ assumptions can not be a factor in police interactions. He may have been allowed to own this gun but that little personal sack of pot blows this way out of proportion. This kids life may be over because of a bored cop in the middle of no where saw somebody do a uturn. Seriously sir you can't always assume these cops are 100% like you always do. But like god , keeping the faith huh? Wake up Jack!

By the way jack..... You of all people know how dirty cops really are. Hint hint.

Not as dirty as this little bastard. Just want in my neighborhood is a dope smoking idiot with weapons. Just obey the law & there's no problem.

The gun is his and registered. He is not a thug and works. Yes, his recreational pot. They got him on that. And yes, he had his hunting knives in his truck. Who doesn't around here? Since when are those illegal? We will have to wait and see but the search is very suspect with a questionable probable cause.

As far as I can tell he was. Illegal uturn my ass. And traffic stops never should become searches ever!

Amen. His gun. Knives are legal as his gun. He did a uturn in a back country road. I believe this cop should be in town getting luarels real criminals.

Why are you guys making excuses for a gun toting drug user?? He got caught due to committing an illegal act. The officer did a good job and got this idiot off the streets, I don;t care if the gun was legal or not because the owner is a drug user who has no business with a firearm while under the influence. Ever heard the words "public safety." He just plain did dumb and got caught.....you can't fix stupid!!!!!

OK pot! So cops need no guns when drinking? They get smashed when partying. And I know several cops that smoke pot. And what illegal act? Its not against the law to make a uturn unless posted. Your correct with your last four words there Humpty!
