Republicans Roll Out Right-to-Work Bills

Sen. Rand Paul and House Republicans have introduced legislation to strictly limit the ability of unions to force workers to have to pay them dues.

Both right-to-work bills would amend the National Labor Relations Act to prohibit contracts between labor unions and businesses that force all of a company's workers to join a union or at least pay it a fee as a condition of employment. The legislation is certain to meet fierce Democratic resistance.

Under current law, states can prohibit those contracts if they choose. Twenty-four states have passed right-to-work laws, including two, Indiana and Michigan, in the last three years. The Republicans' legislation would make that the national standard.

I never could understand why anyone would be required to join a union in order to have a job at a particular company.

It smacks of communism.
However, if they want to be a union member the choice should be there.

if unions are so great, they would have no problem allowing this

they would attract people just by being better for those people

workers would be happy to send them a check every month, and there would be no need for it to be deducted from thier pay

The teachers union is trying to do that in Maryland. Its called the fair share act. It would require all teachers to pay for the union regardless if they wanted to join or not. Its completely b.s. all the union does is support liberal agendas

Why would anyone who has to earn their paycheck, support the "right to work for less"?

2:14, ill do fine on my own without the union thugs stealing my money for their political gains.

2:14 - the option of joining a union would still be there

just no force to do so

whats the problem with choice?

If the unions are as good as they say people will gladly join. If you have to force someone to pay $630 a year to join than maybe they aren't as good as they think they are. By the way the maryland teachers union spends MILLIONS of dollars a year supporting liberal democrat politicians. I have enough intelligence to know that liberal democrats are not good for our state.

Teachers are already subjected to mandatory union fees in many other counties mainly on the western shore of Maryland. The Fair Share Act requires all local BOE s to negotiate a fair share fee if the local union wants to present this through the collective bargaining process. Many Wicomico teachers have heard that the local union, WCEA, is putting this in their negotiations with WCBOE. This means that all employees would be forced to pay a fee to the union no choice about it. Most of that money will go to the MSEA.
