Md. Residents Caught In Middle Of Immigration Battle

BALTIMORE (WJZ) — It was to be an historic day for millions of undocumented workers. Tuesday, a presidential order would allow some to apply for a stay of deportation—but a ruling by a Texas judge has derailed those plans. Now tens of thousands of Marylanders are caught in the middle of a political battle.

Meghan McCorkell spoke with one father about his emotional fight.

Carlos Crespo is one of 55,000 Marylanders that could be eligible for the immigration reform program. Ten thousand are here in the Baltimore area. He’s been in the country for 14 years, but for Carlos Crespo, the fear of deportation is constant.

“Yes, we are still filled with fear,” he said.

Crespo’s five-year-old daughter is a US citizen but he and his wife are not. Under the president’s immigration reform plan, he’d be able to apply for a work permit.

We need to alter the provision that awards citizenship just because someone is born here because it draws illegals who then claim hardship because they cannot stay here with a child born here.

Suggestion: Born here to non-citizen parents = provisional citizenship if, and only if, parents return to native country, get in line and are granted proper immigration status and become US citizens. Then & only then does the provisional birth status convert.

Cumbersome? Maybe.
Time consuming? Probably.

Legal immigration is desirable. Illegal immigration is not.

Gather em up and dump them in D.C.

When you come to live here, you should have to apply for citizenship right away. If not, and you get caught-- go straight back where you came from

That picture is gonna save them.

If she's been in this country 10 years and still isn't a citizen, she's not trying!

And, she's just been "minding her own business"? I guess that means studying to become a citizen is not what she considers her "business".

Perfect candidate for deportation!

People always uses the Citizenship by Birth as an excuse. People using this exception should know the true meaning and why this law was created. It was not for these illegals and all other Nationalities that come here and rent a hotel room when they are close to delivery have the child then return to their Country of origin / where they live / have their citizenship just so the child will be an American citizen and get our benefits without earning them.
