MIKULSKI, CARDIN ANNOUNCE ADDITIONAL $6.2 MILLION IN FEDERAL ENERGY ASSISTANCE FUNDING FOR MARYLAND FAMILIES WITH MODEST INCOMES

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senators Barbara A. Mikulski and Ben Cardin (both D-Md.) today announced that Maryland will receive an additional $6.2 million in federal energy assistance through the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) to help families with modest incomes stay warm this winter. This brings Maryland’s total to $68.3 million in federal funds and is made possible through the recently-passed Consolidated and Further Continuing Appropriations Act of 2015 law.

“No family should be forced to choose between paying the heating bill and putting food on the table,” said Senator Mikulski, Vice Chairwoman of the Senate Appropriations Committee which funds LIHEAP. “I fought hard for these funds in the federal checkbook so that families would have a government on their side when they need it most. This critical energy assistance for families with modest incomes will help those most in need care for themselves and their families during this frigid winter.”

“We cannot leave the most vulnerable Maryland families in the dark and cold. This federal funding is good news for low-income families who rely on LIHEAP to keep their homes safe and warm during the winter months,” said Senator Cardin. “Public health and public safety obliges the federal government to help keep the power on for households in need.”

LIHEAP provides critical federal home energy assistance for those who need it most through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Today’s announcement of an additional $6.2 million for Maryland families is part of $300 million in additional funding released nationwide. In Maryland, more than 113,000 households relied on LIHEAP in 2013. This additional funding will ensure more Maryland households aren’t left out in the cold this winter. Eligibility for LIHEAP is based on income, family size and the availability of resources.

I'm assuming at this point that this was a parting gift from Mr. O'Spending. It's probably announced in a defense mode so that if Governor Hogan pulls the funding, the Democratic moneywasters will be able to cry poverty and horrific torture from the Republicans because they just hate us.

LOL!

What a bunch of airheads!

I love the wording for low income. (modest ) I'm 55 years old and ever since I was young they continue to throw millions at the poor. But they never become anything but for decades. I'm all for helping people out but I think for 10 generationso is a little much.

Unfortunately I feel that the democrats will get elected again because of the welfare crowd will come out in the multi millions for the free $ unless something drastic happens.

Just more FAIR SHARE income redistribution.. taking from the "rich" (those who work) and giving to the "poor" ( those who do NOT work.)

This is exactly why electricity/heating costs keep rising.. government covering the excess costs.
EVERY TIME gov't gets financially involved in something, the costs go up. If there weren't so many programs to fund the excess, it would stop.
Do you think DPL would continue to send you all the electricity you want if they knew they were NOT going to get paid for all of it?
Would energy producers continue to raise prices if they knew they would price themselves out of the market?

Then do something about the exorbitant fees charged by the electric & other utilities companies if you care so much . Our electric bill has been $1000 bucks just because we turn on the heat.

agreed maybe we should just go back to basics...Divide up some land in lets say Alaska or maybe buy some land in Eastern Russia and give the poor the 100 acres and a mule that they were promised and call it a day! That could be the cheapest long term solution to the problem.
