REPORT: NFL ASKED TEAMS TO SIGN MICHAEL SAM TO AVOID 'NIGHTMARE SITUATION'

The NFL was reportedly scared of the mainstream media blowback that it would receive if Michael Sam, the league's first openly gay player, did not make a team.

When the Rams cut Michael Sam last weekend, the NFL reportedly called teams to inquire if they had "evaluated Sam as a possible practice squad player," according to a report from MMQB's Peter King.

Perhaps they should have asked a team to sign his sister.

Not taking any sides on the this issue at hand but I really believe that gay individuals are already and have been in professional sports.. I mean gay people are associated with every other industry what makes sports any different

Keeping Sam cost someone else a job, It's a clear case of discrimination.

I really think it gets down to the fact, that the players don't want gay players in the locker room...

The NFL is about as homophobic as you can get. Above being the co SEC player of the year last season, this guy had an outstanding preseason. He almost does not even get signed to a practice squad. 32 teams, 10 players on each practice squad. Are you telling me that he is not better than 320 players that are not even on NFL active rosters? That is laughable. The NFL ran away from this guy because they were afraid of the distractions he would bring. At the same time they embrace druggies and wife beaters. It is just incredible.

If he is good someone should keep him. If they are only keeping him because he is gay that is wrong. Equal rights for all not special rights for some.

9:32 well said. The guy has the creds like it or not. Gay or not I think Dallas has the money and the media control to have him around. They just resigned a drunk that killed a fellow player driving stoned. Get over it. Ravens let Lewis back in. We all know the deal there. I do agree that if any team mate has an issue showering with the guy then they make some changes. Sams sexualality should not be imposed on anyone.

The NFL is a game for REAL men. No room for homos.

So just because he's gay he gets a free pass? Even if he sucks? I guess it must pay to be gay!

@ 9:32 come on...he was 7th round draft pick...it's difficult for a 5th round pick to make the final roster of a team, much less 7th round. You saying NFL is "homophobic" is just plain stupid. They guy is simply not as good as the other players. Why should any team be coerced into taking him simply because the media would make a stink about it? This country is going into the toilet due to political correctness--time to stop trying to please the small minority that squawk about this type of thing.

You are right. Never thought of it that way. What a shame.

I enjoy a lot of different sports and I'll be honest and say that I wouldn't necessarily want to be known as the team with a gay player...BUT if an individual, gay or not, was good enough to help my team win I wouldn't care if that individual was black or white, male or female, gay or straight, Christian or Muslim. Team owners, coaches, managers, fans want players who can assist with wins and if this dude could do that, believe me, teams would be lining up to sign him. Apparently he's just not good. My opinion is that he used sexuality at the jump because he knew that he possibly wasn't going to be good enough and wanted some excuse to fall back on when he was cut. The fact that people are even talking about this is ludicrous. I'm sure the Ravens didn't want to deal with the publicity of Ray Lewis but he was a GREAT player and HELPED them win. The bottom line is winning and if he were good enough to do that someone would sign him.
