Air National Guard pilot killed after military jet crash in Va. mountains

DEER VALLEY, Va. — Officials say the missing Massachusetts Air National Guard pilot whose F-15C Eagle crashed Wednesday morning in remote mountains near Deerfield Valley, Virginia died in the crash.

The pilot’s name is being withheld pending notification of family members.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and we are doing all we can to support them during this very difficult time,” Col. James Keefe, Commander, 104th Fighter Wing said. “We ask that everyone respect the privacy of the family and allow them the time they need to grieve.”

The jet assigned to the 104th Fighter Wing crashed at about 9:05 a.m. Wednesday; five minutes after crews lost radio contact with the pilot. The pilot did report an in-flight emergency prior to losing communication. The military has not yet released details of that communication.
