Even the most staunch among President Barack Obama’s supporters cannot deny that the White House is plagued by scandals and overrun by crises. The border with Mexicoand violence in the middle east occupy many recent headlines, but Obama’sproblems do not stop there.
This administration is also contending with a spate of legal reversals from theSupreme Court, a sluggish economy, the collapse of the VA healthcare system, and increasingly damning revelations regarding the IRS scandal, just to name a few.

First off the cost. Crawford was protected by Secret Service whether Bush was in resident or not as are all presidents homes. Presidents homes are also equipped with secure communication and other things so it's very much like being at the WH. There are secure areas as well as permanent no fly zones and armored vehicles on site. No advance teams are necessary for prep when a president goes home as happens when they go on vacation. The Bushes by comparison to any other family in the WH took very few vacations. They did take advantage of Camp David quite a bit which is also set up similarly to the WH and a presidents home.
The biggest regret of the Bush twins when they left the WH was that they traveled so little and actually told Michelle Obama that she should use the opportunity to travel as they did not. This was widely reported.

Last year it was determined that Bush took 18 vacations total. At the same point in his presidency Obama has taken over 90.
There is a huge difference in going to one's home repeatedly and what Obama is doing. The costs to tax payers is staggering as well and would be a fraction if he were just going to his home.

If the democrats who had control of Congress at the time had listened to President Bush the "economic disaster" could have been diverted. He saw a looming crash, caused by Clinton's expansion of the Community Reinvestment Act forcing lenders to approve risky loans. He asked for hearing into Freddie and Fannie and Congress refused.
Democrat B Frank famously said "These two entities—Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac—are not facing any kind of financial crisis."
When the housing market crashed, it caused the economic downturn.
