MARYLAND STATE POLICE ANNOUNCE ACCREDITATION SITE VISIT

(PIKESVILLE, MD) – The Maryland State Police has been working for almost three years to achieve national law enforcement accreditation by demonstrating that it meets national professional standards. The next phase in the process is a four-day on-site assessment by out-of-state law enforcement representatives that is scheduled to begin on August 10, 2014.

Administered by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA), the accreditation program requires agencies to comply with state-of-the-art standards in four basic areas: policy and procedures, administration, operations and support services. The Maryland State Police received accreditation awards for Communications and the Training Academy earlier this year.

As part of the on-site assessment, agency employees and members of the community are encouraged to offer comments to the CALEA assessors during a telephone public information session on Monday, August 11, 2013, between the hours of 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. To reach the assessors, please call 410-875-3900.

Those wishing to offer comments are asked to limit their remarks to 10 minutes and to address the department’s ability to comply with CALEA’s law enforcement standards. A copy of the standards is available at Maryland State Police Headquarters in Pikesville. Please contact Captain Doug Baralo, Maryland State Police Accreditation Manager, at douglas.baralo@maryland.gov with questions.

Anyone wishing to submit written comments about the ability of the Maryland State Police to comply with the standards for accreditation may send them to the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement, Inc. (CALEA), 13575 Heathcote Boulevard, Suite 320 Gainesville, Virginia 20155.

Would those "standards" also include the posting of citizens pictures in the back offices of the State Police barracks so that the troopers can dish out (provoke??) extra, how shall we say, "attention" to those who have dared to challenge their status as SERVANTS and questioned their law breaking actions?
What's that phone number, again??

CALEA Accreditation Review of Maryland State Police 2014

* My comments today are based on our effort to get MSP trooper vehicles equipped with AEDs (Defibrillators), especially on MD rural highways!
* MSP troopers are trained in both CPR and AED use, however only few (specialized services) MSP troopers vehicles carry AEDs!
* MSP troopers are typical 1st responders to ALS emergencies on MD rural highways they patrol.
* On MD Rural Highways and surrounding communities , the EMS services are typically volunteer and are not fast enough in real response times to save a person in cardiac arrest.
* The best a MSP trooper can do now is CPR until a local EMS unit arrives and uses their AED unit.
* Only a few MSP specialized units carry AEDs. The MSP VIP transport vehicles carry AEDs, why not all for the non VIP MD citizens?
* On the positive side for CALEA consideration (Police & Public Safety) of accreditation, MSP is presently working with some of us in rural MD counties to allow donated AEDs to be in MSP trooper vehicles.
* The head of MSP has given written permission for barrack commanders to accept and equip trooper vehicles with donate AEDs.
* A group of us in Far Western MD Garrett County are presently working with our local McHenry barracks commander to help our effort to gain a grant for AEDs. It will require designing EMS protocols and communications to allow MSP to use all their life support training to help save lives of both MD citizens and possibly even MSP officers themselves.
* To this end, it is hopefully we will be able convince some of the Maryland Assembly members to offer or support a bill in January 2015 to this end.
