See What Happens When Adults Are Subjected to ‘Hilarious’ Common Core Math


Caleb Bonham, editor-in-chief of Campus Reform, recently took to the streets of Boulder, Colorado, with the specific purpose of frustrating people with Common Core math. Needless to say, he accomplished his goal.

Apparently using an actual Common Core math problem, Bonham used a small dry erase board to walk unsuspecting individuals through the steps — and there are many.

As a math teacher, and using common core standards, there are things I do and dont agree with. But what this video says is that this is how all students must solve subtraction problems. Thats not true. This is one method that students have the ability to use. It actually shows the concept of borrowing to students more than the method that we are used to. This isn't the one necessary way. Just one suggested method. Students would also be shown the classic method as well.

First graders learn best by working with physical objects, teachers give children materials to use during math lessons such as number cubes, pattern blocks, and color rods.

Looks like they are teaching everyone subtraction as if they were all still in elementary school.

3:50. I would hope that anyone learning subtraction IS still in elementary school. When did you learn it?

Looks like he was using a first grade lesson with adults. Why doesn't he say what grade this lesson came from? Seems like good teaching to me.

More cherry picking to make something people don't like sound bad.
