Ocean City To Discuss Smoke-Free Beach; Referendum To Gauge Voters’ Stance Suggested

OCEAN CITY – Whether to ban smoking on the beach as well as the Boardwalk will be formally discussed by Ocean City lawmakers next month.

According to Councilman Brent Ashley during strategic planning sessions last week, the Mayor and City Council discussed having Ocean City follow some of its competitor resorts and officially institute a smoke-free beach.

“With the council members that were there, I think the support is there to move forward with some type of plan to be proactive in this [smoke-free beach],” Ashley said at the conclusion of Monday evening’s Mayor and City Council legislative meeting. “All of our neighbors have done this. The State of New Jersey is looking at making all of their beaches and parks smoke-free.”

Another reason to not go to the beaches and leave the nanny state...how is this a second hand smoke issue?

Lets see, I can't use bad words, I can't smoke, I can't wear a thong, I can't have a beer in public, and this place is not family friendly, huh.. I guess I don't need to go there!

Hello Assateague. Even better, we will stay home and enjoy our waterfront property.

NO smoking... NO Frisbees... NO dogs... NO radios... NO large skim boards... NO profanity... NO ball playing... NO digging deeper than one-feet-deep... NO beer. But... "Enjoy our beach!"
How sad that we live in such an era that a sign stating "Please Be Considerate To Others" isn't sufficiently all you would really need to post.

Not a problem for me.The "low rent" people that visit there drove me out 3 years ago.

OC (and other resorts) have forgotten who the CUSTOMER is. Same goes for Ashley who rarely if ever rides the bus there much less visits the beach. What's next? 2nd hand beer breath?

F**K the second hand smoke. I don't care where you are allowed to smoke on the beach it still smells and gags the crap out of me. Please ban smoking on the beach as well as all public areas.

Can we wear bathing suits there, or will there be a dress code as well?

You mean White Trash City. I dont go there. I do miss the thrashers fris covered in mexican sweat. The gang bangers on the boards. Twenty seasonals kicking the crap out of some guy from Pa. The thirty year old guys from Showell with the fifteen year old cousin in her daisy dukes. That has had her second child name ricky bob. Oh the first was Bobby Ricky sorry.

Yep I do miss old O.C.

In this big scheme of things "what difference does it make" if people smoke on the beach. Alcohol and the drunks are the one and only social problem OC faces. When and until the powers that be decide to become leaders and face the alcohol problem head on, OC will continue it's downward spiral.
The island has become one big urinal and a repository for human vomit. In OC property owners don't install security cameras for crime, they get them in an attempt to stop the trespassers from taking leaks on their property. 90+ percent of the crimes are committed by someone under the influence.

I am offended by drunks, bars on the boardwalk where children and families are supposed to be having fun, rowdy/out of control young people who take care of nothing and have no consideration for others or property. I have a problem with not allowing smoking on the beach ... it is outdoors and unless you are sitting far too close to a smoker, it shouldn't be an issue at all! If you don't want to sit near crass people, smokers, drunks, etc. on the beach...pick up your towel and move! There's plenty of room! I just don't "get" it!
