Last Nights NAACP Candidates Forum - Which Candidate Will Lead The Charge: JOBS, JOBS, JOBS, EDUCATIONAL ACCOUNTABILITY, CRIME

Last night the NAACP sponsored a Candidates Forum that was held at the Chipman Center in Salisbury.  The forum was narrated by Orville Penn and Mary Ashanti.  The House was packed with guest and candidates and the NAACP put on quite a show.

JOBS, JOBS, JOBS, RECENT WICOMICO EDUCATIONAL AUDIT, AND CRIME DETERENT - were the main topics of discussion.

Right out of the gate, Bobby Culver, the challenging Candidate for County Executive - took current County Executive Rick Pollitt to task on his proposed method to restoring fiscal stability to an already severely deteriorated Wicomico job market.  He differentiated himself from Pollitt by citing his vast business experience and entrepreneurial background - as a catalyst in helping to restore Wicomico to her former glory enjoyed in the 70s and 80s - when Wicomico had at least some manufacturing base.  Rick Pollitt - alluded to tight economic times and seemed to be optimistic and cited the recent Sage Group & Memo Diricker report that is soon to be released in the very near future.  Hopefully this specially assigned task force will help to offer some solutions to the current financial dilemma.

  • JOBS
There was virtual unanimity among all of the candidates that creation of jobs was their first priority.  One particular District 1 candidate - McKinley Hayward, cited that -'encouraging detached Housing should be a number 1 priority as opposed to multi-family dwellings.' -  He alluded to the need to foster individual residential Housing as this is one of the key industries needed to help Wicomico out of the doldrums.  (From this authors perspective - he seemed to turbo charge the audience with his economic enthusiasm)

Another noteworthy observation - was current District 5 Councilman - Joe Holloway's warning that - 'something needs to be done to insure that the current business climate does not diminish that may jeopardize the poultry industry'.  (Author emphasis added - he seemed to weight-in heavily on the importance of maintaining a sound foundational ground for the existing poultry industries).

  • RECENT EDUCATIONAL AUDIT
Here was another topic whereby there was virtual unanimity on the seriousness of holding the Board of Education to a higher accountability standard.  Virtually all of the candidates seemed to indicate there was a need to invoke additional accountability safeguards as a result of the recent Board of Education audit conducted by the Maryland Legislative group.  Many suggestions were made to have an elected school board as opposed to an appointed school board.

  • CRIME
Many of the candidates expressed their concern for a rash of recent incidents - (shooting at the Maryland State Police Barracks & fugitive altercation incident on Main Street) - as further evidence that additional measures are needed to help insure public tranquility.  Wicomico County States Attorney Mat Maciarello - was also in attendance and there was a general concensus among many of the candidates that his Department was presently doing an outstanding job in trying to maintain public order.

Here are the list of candidates that were in attendance at last nights event.  There are two candidates that were not in attendance, District One candidate - Marvin Ames and District Two candidate - Kirby Travers

Can we see a breakdown of these folks by their voting record?

There are always Democrats, Republicans, and Independents...

The ones that bother me are the RINO's...voting records will show their colours!

Wow - I wish I had known about this event because I would have attended. Thank you for giving me blow by blow coverage as I was totally unaware of this meeting.

Thanks Joe for keeping us posted. I believe that there is 'changes in the wind'. At least I hope so.

Kirby Travers was not in attendance. He skipped the forum.

I haven't heard a thing about this on any of the other medias. Nada. Thanks for keeping the public informed on this symposium. I'll be looking to make a change.

The at large choices are depressing.

Anonymous said...

John Hall, unopposed. How sad is that? Tells you how deteriorated that section of town is now.

Anonymous said...

with very few exceptions, no quality people running. Who would want to? Wicomico probably can't be saved. Thanks Rick and Co, Prettyman and fellow RINOs for destroying us. A special place in hell for Prettyman who has done all this damage and is heading for Florida. No loyalty to anything or anyone. Disgusting.

I understand that Matt Holloway did the Rino thing by offering the county to give the Chipman Center money for repairs. Buying votes. sounds as if he's been watching how Conway works.

Bottom line is, unless you vote the Democrats out, nothing will change. All these issues that are pressing now are because of Democratic leadership.

Why does anyone even entertain this forum sponsored by a blatantly racist organization?

Beezer said...

I will say this - Mary Ashanti and Orville Penn did a remarkable job in narrating this event. I did not observe any racial bias from their organization. They appeared to be very passionate about trying to advance all nationalities. IMHO - this event was handled in a very professional way.

I feel as though there is going to be a change in administrations very soon.

Joe - thank you for helping to keep the public informed. I to was not aware of this function. I also noticed that none of the other media has announced any of this. Thanks again for helping to keep your community informed.

I wish we knew about this yesterday so I could have went.

I hope bob laid into that fool pollitt.

So pollit takes bussines advice from pontificators Sage Group & Memo Diricker report that is soon to be released..??..lol these guys could not run a lemonade stand...bet they recommend some more wasteful stupid studies...

Looks as though this is making to be a good race right up until the end.

John Hall looked like a buffoon -- even before he said anything.
Why didn't the Republicans get someone else in that district?

Anonymous said...

If Matt Holloway wants the County to fund the Chipman Center, he should be canned ASAP.

Anonymous said...

NAACP does a much better job than the "give the anointed ones the answers" Chamber of Commerce.

2:30pm What are you talking about. Prettyman already is in Florida and that's where she votes. Check it out.

I think Pollitt realizes he is in for the fight of his life. This is going to be a good match-up.

Anonymous said...

I don't know who Kirby Travers is, but it doesn't look good on him to be the only one to miss this function.

If it wasn't for Salisbury News I would never have known about this meeting. I just wish I had known earlier as I would have liked attended. However, I'm glad to hear that there was a good turnout.

Are you people even awake? It doesn't matter who is in office, the shore will not come back....companies aren't going come to the shore as there is nothing to offer. The past few decades have seen the decline of the shore and now as it falls faster by the day you all stand around and point fingers. Sadly it fixes nothing. Everyday it seems to get worse. To prosper you have to accept change and progress. It is not the job of elected officials to create jobs. Good luck Delmarva no need to worry about the last one leaving to turn the lights off..... They burned out long ago....

Anonymous said...

Mr. Travers has been out of the County this week on a prior commitment. Mrs. Ashanti was notified in advance of his inability to attend.

Anonymous said...

Pollitt has had enough time, I will agree things are bad here when we have other areas doing better, that is just the D- our local executive should be graded. His plan isn't working. We need people that can work with the budget without all the double talk that goes with it (Matt Creamer/Stausberg) Get ready to sharpen your pencils before cutbacks include your jobs!

I agree that Hall's performance was lacking. He seems to be very uptight about something like it is bothering him. My suggestion, if you can't take the heat then get out of the kitchen.

Anonymous said...

8:56 -

Republicans blew it by not getting someone to knock out Hall the RINO.

Anonymous said...

You people are zipper heads.... Do you honestly think the shore can turn around? Companies are leaving every week.... People are leaving as the jobs are gone. There is no magic wand folks. 20 years ago would have been the time to start to look at what was begining to happen, now is way to late. If you think I'm wrong see how bad it will be by summer.

Anonymous said...

Let's hope its Cannon and Boda in the primary so Matt H. is no longer on the Council -- one less RINO can't hurt.

Anonymous said...

How about flap-jaw Mitchell?

Never mind.

What ever she said was self-serving.

Good question. Anyone with any sense knows he is not even a RINO he is a Democrat. Look who he is married to, one of the biggest supporters of Jim Ireton. John Hall is Jim and Chucks sweetheart.

I noticed John Hall and that Hastings guy reading notes the entire time instead of speaking to us the audience.

I am a republican, but I will tell you this. I would vote for a Democrat before I would vote for John Hall. He really should change his party affiliation from Republican to a left leaning Democrat. The guy just flat out has lost his bearings. Lord only knows what the central committee was thinking when they replaced Caldwell with Hall.

Responding to 8:26

Why do you think the Dems aren't fielding a candidate for Hall's District.

Anonymous said...

I would not be surprised if Mathew Holloway finds himself getting bumped in this election. He's gone against the party line grain in many of his public encounters. He seems to appear very vulnerable in this election.

My assessment is that everyone of the incumbents are going to experience difficulty in retaining their seats. If I'm not mistaken, before the recession hit Wicomico had an annual budget of about 130 million (give or take a little). After the recession hit it went down to approximately 100 million. Here is the killer, the budget has now gradually increased to about the same level before the recession hit (about 130 million - give or take)- but look at the recessions aftermath to our local economy. Real estate assessment base is down, teachers expenses up, no jobs, increased local government growth, private sector wages are down. For all of the above reasons a Revolution is in the making. Anything can happen politically. One can only squeeze so much blood out of a turnip.

Anonymous said...

In response to 8:26 - The Dems didn't field anyone because they already have their man in. Just look at his voting record.

This is how Obama got into office. Everyone thought Bush was bad for the country and some guy came along promising hope and change. Now everyone is once again hoping for change. Be careful your vote could carry a four year mistake before you can fix it.

John Hall is controlled by Jim Ireton. You better believe they blew it.

The ones responsible are up for re-election on the Central Committee. Be sure to vote out David Parker and John Palmer.

Only a fool would vote for a Democrat on the County Council this election. If you like your property rights you better do your homework for this election before you vote or support a Democrat.

Anonymous said...

I agree with 8:57's post - conditions are ripe for a revolution. It simply(economy) is not happening at the State level, and local level. One would think things would have improved in six years, and yet the economy is worse. Simple answer to a simple question; Do you think you are better off today than you were 6 years ago, my answer is no.

Anonymous said...

Be careful with Mitchell, Hastings and Pagano. The Democrats are going to spend a lot of money on them from special interest groups just like they did in the city with Jake Day and Jim Ireton.

Think about it with Mitchell, Hastings and Pagano winning their seats the will make up the majority with a guaranteed Democrat for District 1. To sweeten the pot they will have the Left Leaning RINO guaranteed a seat in District 4.

This could be an ugly 4 years coming if those three get elected to the County Council especially if Rick Pollitt get re-elected.

Where was Marc Kilmer? Didn't see him there.

Beezer said...

Marc Kilmer was there at the NAACP function, however, the other candidate from District 3 was not there.

Marvin Ames?

OOPs - I made a mistake, he wasn't there either. I'll go back and correct the entry.

According to everyone at the forum it is working beautifully. Most all believe to leave the issue alone. It is there to help pad your own hip pocket as opposed to bureaucrats.

Anonymous said...

Thanks for doing a great job in covering this event. I appreciate all of your articles and this one is no exception.

Anonymous said...

Hopefully Boda and Cannon win the Republican Primary, Boda will be the more fiscally conservative of the two and is a good replacement for Culver. Matt Holloway compromises to easily for my taste.

Kilmer, Boda, Joe Holloway would be the conservative faction. Dodd & Cannon will side with them most of the time. John Hall would be the most Liberal of the group and Ernie Davis will be pro business but will rubber stamp the Board of the Education.

I have just saw a Mckinley Hayward for city council sign.

You do not want this man representing the city, look him up on MD Judiciary Case Search he has 4 active judgments against him going back to 2000 that he has not paid.

He is very anti police, making very racial comments towards white people. This man used to own Super Soda behind McDonalds on Rt 50 and would have prostitutes working out of his store.

His son has been in tons of trouble for drug dealing, look on MD Judiciary Case search for him too.

You do not want this man speaking for Salisbury.
