Tilghman Elementary Starts Serving Dinner

TILGHMAN — With about 62 percent of Tilghman Island’s elementary students qualifying for free and reduced meals, the school has now started to serve dinner to students as part of an after-school program.

“In the state of Maryland if 50 percent of your school qualifies for (free and reduced meals) then you qualify to serve dinner,” Ginny Cornwell, executive director of Tilghman Area Youth Association, said. TAYA is the organization that is making the meal service possible.

The free and reduced-price meals program is a federally-funded program in which children in households receiving benefits from the Food Supplement Program, Temporary Cash Assistance, or that have a gross income within the free limits of the Federal Income Eligibility Guidelines, receive meals for free or at a discounted price.

what's really sad is no one can get a job that pays well enough to putfood on the table ..not because of the min wage.... but the value of a $ ...and the lack of buying power.THATS WHAT NEEDS TO CHANGE..BUT ONLY IF THEY END THE FED.....the nanny state is doing

Families of these kids already get food stamps. Even if all school age children in the family are eating three meals free at school, the food stamps are not reduced. Taxpayers are paying twice to feed the same kids during the school week.

how do they survive in the summer when school is out?

Wicomico school system gives free food to anyone who comes to get it at several locations throughout the county all summer long. Again, that's in addition to the food stamps the kids' families are already getting. Why assume there's no food in the summer anyway? Food stamps are year round.

Can anyone in social services explain why the food stamp allotment is not adjusted if all of the kids are eating free at school? I'm honestly curious about that.

6:38-Food stamp allotments have dropped sharply as of late. That pretty much explains it as far as I am concerned.

Drop or not, and this predates the drop, I'm still not sure why food stamp allotment isn't reduced if all school age kids are eating at school. Taxpayers are paying for the food stamps and also for the free meals at school so M-F for nine months of the year they are paying twice to feed the same kids.
