BILL WOULD MAKE MD. SECOND STATE IN THE NATION TO REQUIRE PAID SICK LEAVE

WASHINGTON -The Maryland Earned Sick and Safe Leave Act, expected to be introduced next week in Annapolis, could mean more than 700,000 workers in the state, who currently have no earned paid sick days, may not have to choose between staying home if they or a child is sick, and a paycheck.

A coalition of 108 organizations are working to make earned paid sick leave a reality for Marylanders and plan to support the bill sponsored by State Delegate John Olszewski, D-Baltimore County, and State Sen. Catherine Pugh, D-Baltimore.

If they are successful Maryland will become the second state in the nation to pass such a law. In 2011, the Connecticut legislature became the first to pass a statewide, paid sick days law.

It's called a "vacation" day. F that. More entitlement.

As I read it, the bill requires employers to offer 1 hour of sick paid leave per 30 hours worked. It requires employers to permit the earning of 56 hours (7days) of paid sick leave per calendar year, and require employers to pay up to 80 hours of sick pay per year, provided those hours are accrued. And yes, it seems that the bill does require employers to “roll over” unused hours to the next year. Additionally the bill allows employees to request sick leave to care for someone other than themselves. It also does not permit an employer to request the nature of the illness that is subject to a sick leave request. Another interesting component is that it requires an employer allow an employee to take sick leave in smallest increments that an employers payroll system can calculate. In most cases this is a tenth of an hour. Although the bill specifically states that an employee may request sick leave in one hour increments. The bill goes on to outline record keeping and notification requirements plus fines and penalties for violations. If this bill becomes law, it will be abused to no end. You just can't make this stuff up!

And people wonder why unions are a JOKE???? REALLY worked 40 plus years sick days were a vacation day, which for most companies you have to use in the calendar year or lose them...too much government involvement

Ya know what's so funny, I bet, that every single one of you commenters get some form of paid sick leave.

But don't make employers treat their employees fairly!
Its good enough for you, but not anyone else.
