Unemployed Engineer Resolves 'Not Going To Be' Victim

Ted Randolph does not see himself as a victim of anything, but he has seen life from both sides of the window at On Our Own, a place for homeless people to spend the day.

On a break from his part-time job at On Our Own, he sat at an old patio table in the backyard invisible from bustling North Market Street. He had just finished sealing a door and was figuring out what to do to fix the brick walkway that is sinking into the yard.

Until two years ago, he had full-time work as a stationary engineer — doing plumbing, electrical and carpentry work for various employers. At 56, he wonders if they just found him too old and too experienced or too expensive to keep around, but they let him go, he said.

I'd like to see more like this, especially maybe some of the other races doing the same thing!
