First Wife Gets It All

The Supreme Court says a dead federal employee's benefits go to his ex-wife despite his remarriage. Warren Hillman made his first wife the beneficiary of his Federal Employees' Group Life Insurance policy before their divorce. He never changed the designation after he remarried. When Hillman died, his first wife got the money. The second wife sued. Despite Virginia law, no luck. The court says named beneficiaries get the money.

It's Warren's fault he never changed who was the beneficiary. Something similar happened to a relative of mine. There was a divorce, and it was a forgotten life insurance policy purchased over 30 years ago. Nobody remembered it, and we didn't find out about it until the insurer sent a letter. Thankfully, the beneficiary worked it out with the rest of the family, and split the check 50/50. Better than nothing.

we tell you guys all the time to update your beneficiaries regularly. but you guy just think we want to sell you more insurance (which we do), but we are caught in the middle of this WAAAYYYYY too much. this happens a lot more than you would think.

I blame the courts for most divorce or pre-divorce related homicides. If they weren't so unreasonable when awarding women judgments the husbands wouldn't be so compelled to kill the ex.
