Pre-Release Inmates Denied Access To School Grounds

CENTREVILLE -- County schools let out a month early this school year. Not for students though, but for pre-release inmates from the Eastern Pre-Release Unit in Church Hill.

Since May 8, pre-release inmates are no longer allowed to help the county's Department of Parks and Recreation maintain school grounds.

According to Director of Public Works Todd Mohn, the department has used the members of the EPRU as inexpensive labor for the past dozen years.

Nearly every Maryland State Government owned property or building as pre-release inmates working at them, to include the State Police Barracks, which has caused problems several times,. These inmates are not learning a trade or benefiting themselves because they are doing menial labor. The only benefit is to the State.

Better they be doing "menial labor" than sitting watching cable TV, getting law degrees so they can sue the State or working out so they can beat the crap out of the next guy. Let them work for their room & board.
