Legislative Leaders Say Gas Tax Hike Is Tough Sell

While Maryland legislative leaders say they are painfully aware of the need for additional transportation money, they didn't sound very confident on Friday during a preview of the upcoming session that there will be enough support in the Legislature to produce a revenue package of the magnitude that is needed.

Sen. Edward Kasemeyer, who chairs the Senate Budget and Taxation Committee, told participants at the Maryland Association of Counties winter meeting that tough votes on tax increases in recent years have worn out lawmakers on that idea.

"These people are fatigued," said Kasemeyer, D-Baltimore County.

Maryland like DC has a spending problem that lawmakers refuse to deal with because of their special interest buddies.

Trillion dollars a year wouldn't be enough. All ways want more.

I guess omalley shouldn't have raided the transportation fund, then turned around and raised taxes 27 different time. What a crook.

Delaware's tax is .23 per gallon and VA's is .175. Is there a gas tax initiative in those states ? These corrupt politicians always start by stating "it hasn't been raised since.....". Unbelievable.

I guess they need more money for some more guardrails...wish I had got to bid on that contract. But it all in who you know (or are related to). Its insane all the guardrails they have put up and/or replaced all over Maryland.

Here's an idea, amend the state constitution to state that all motor fuel taxes and fees will only be used maintain and build roads. Forbid those funds from being used for road side eye candy.

Asses a tax on the sales of bicycles, pedal powered vehicle and related products, 2%. Require the registration of all bicycles and pedal powered vehicle in the state and issue registration sticker to be affixed to same. Registration to be renewed every 24 months, $15.00. Constitutionally mandate that all fees and taxes be used to maintain and build bicycle lanes and trails. Violation for failing to display registration sticker will be $30.00 of which $15.00 will be used to pay for registration sticker.

Asses a tax on the sales all footwear, 2%. Constitutionally mandate that all taxes on footwear be use to maintain and build pedestrian infrastructure.

All of the above sale taxes shall be in addition to the existing retail sale tax.

Asses like Sand Box John can only think of assessing more taxes on everything we have already bought and paid for, never imagining that there is a theft and spending problem in the first place! Stop taxing us into poverty, and grow an economy! That in itself will pay off.
