Maryland Fines DC Area Water Utility

The Maryland Department of the Environment says Philadelphia-based Sunoco and a suburban Washington water utility have been fined for alleged violations.

The department says the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission paid $55,925 for sewer overflows in 2011. The 163 overflows totaled nearly 1.8 million gallons in 2011, including an 847,000 gallon overflow.
