I-Team finds Md. take-home vehicles taken out of state

BALTIMORE - Millions of Marylanders' taxpayer dollars fund state employees' cars and trucks for use 24/7. The WBAL-TV 11 News I-Team tracked whether the vehicles are necessary for the job or whether they're just a perk.

The I-Team requested from more than three-dozen state agencies the names and titles of employees who have take-home vehicles, in addition to information related to their cost and, in some cases, how often the vehicles are legitimately used to respond to an emergency.

The findings took the I-Team out of state. Maryland has no rules that require employees with take-home vehicles to live in the state. As such, dozens of the vehicles are paid for by the Maryland taxpayer but the employees go home to, for example, Pennsylvania.

Joe, if you become mayor... this is what you need to do for the city... make it so they drive their personal cars to work and home, and not allow them to fuel up their personal cars at the tax payer pump like the State police do ALL THE TIME...

the govt won't fix spending unless WE MAKE THEM... period!!!

Nothing like a family car with free gas on the city tax payers dime.

The Salisbury Fire Department doesn't need that many take home cars. The acting chief needs to be demoted.

We were traveling this weekend across the bay and passed a car with UMES logo and SG tags.....on a Saturday??

Commutes on weekends. With the state car.

I have seen firetrucks being driven and parked at Red Door Sub Shop on a regular basis. I have seen them parked at other food rest. throughtout the city (no fire call). My question is why do they need to drive the costly trucks to their lunch breaks? Can't they use their personal cars and car pool to lunch like the rest of us instead of tax payers footing the fuel/insurance billWhy doesn't the city/county ever monitor these kind of actions to save the poor tax payer some $?

There are so many State agencies here in Salisbury that use State vehicles.I have seen department heads use state vehicles on personal business. The taxpayer is the one paying for the gas while the state employee with the feeling of entitlement because of their position abuses not only their position, but the public trust. Where's the auditor monitoring these actions? Gives public servent a differnt meaning when it's the public being abused. They use vehicles to go to lunch, shopping, and take the car home on weekends. Why not look into the various state agencies here in town?
