Columbia/Ellicott City Ranked Among Best Places To Live

Money Magazine has ranked Columbia/Ellicott City #8 on its “America’s Best Places to Live 2012” list. Columbia/Ellicott City is the only Maryland location chosen in the top 10.
"We truly have the 'best of both worlds' here in Howard County, and I am proud that our strong sense of community, quality of life, and commitment to innovation and job creation continues to be nationally recognized,” said County Executive Ulman. “Thanks to all of the residents and businesses, and those from the public and private sectors, who invest and believe in what our community can accomplish when we work together."

2nd richest county in the nation, too.

Second smallest county in Maryland, but it became a giant in such a short period of time. Initially that was because of its proximity to Washington and Baltimore. Now it's because Howard County has one of the best educational programs in the country, and as a result, they attract many high-tech businesses that pay super money. Howard County went from being a farm county to the richest county in state, and top five richest in the nation in just 35-years.

Also no incorporated towns in Howard County. Something to think about for here!

I never really knew that. I grew up in Howard County and our school was always known as the school with the farmers. I watched as they built all the other schools around the County. Another thing that is nice about Howard County depending on where you live is it is not far from a number of things. We were about equal distance between Frederick, Gaithersburg, Ellicott City and a number of other places. We also were not that close to them either. It took me 45 minutes to drive 18 miles. Usually 25 of that was once I got close to the City.

Howard county was nice before Columbia. I'll take farms anyday over the track housing and malls the congestion in HoCo.
The story of the developement of Columbia (Rouse) wasn't so nice either. The power of eminent domain was used against alot of the large parcel farm owners to build Columbia. They were paid pennies on the dollar for their land.
One lady's (Nancy Smith's Blandair Farm) 300 acres was split in half to built Rt 175. She was paid a pittance and never cashed the check. It sat in a interst paying account and when she eventually died her heirs cashed it. Miss Smith was able to be the last holdout to Rouse. Some of the streets of Columbia dead end at her property so sure were the Rouse Columbia planners that they could run her out and built on her farm.

If she put it into an account, it was 'cashed'.

And she sure wouldn't get interest on nothing.

7:26 What does a derailment on some CSX tracks have to do with living in Howard County?
