Are Young People Just Lazy And Stupid Or Is This Economy Anti-Youth?

Today, National Center for Education Statistics released some ugly numbers for young people looking for work this summer. At some point, the Obama administration needs to take some responsibility.

High school employment has reached a 20-year low. 32 percent of high school students held jobs in 1990. Today, that number has dropped to a whopping 16 percent.

For college students, it’s not much prettier. 40 percent of full-time college students hold jobs—23 percent less than the 52 percent of students who worked in 2000.

Yes -

Most kids today want to get paid, on their terms, for whatever number of hours they want, whether they're there or not. And don't expect them to do too much or treat customers too good - they have pride (and you wonder why retail has a hard time competing with the internet?).

Also though, with real unemployment hovering around 20%, the more mature, more realistic, older folks are willing to do whatever to Earn - reducing opportunities for kids.

They just have the mindset they have learned in the liberal school system and on liberal TV.

1:39-I agree. The other night I saw various Rehobeth Beach business owners being interviewed regarding summer help. They unanimously preferred hiring foreign workers because they would actually work.Hiring American kids was a last resort, because in their words they were spoiled and lazy.

It has nothing to do with being liberal which I am. It has to do with instilling a good work ethic in your children. It takes teaching them they have to work for what they have. It takes teaching them respect for themselves and others. It takes teaching them resposibility. It has NOTHING to do with a political affiliation. My 22 year old daughter works 2 jobs and recently graduated college. She held 2 jobs since high school. My 18 year old son starts college in the fall works full time during school and since he was 16 has had 2 jobs every summer. My 17 year old has a full time job.

It also has to do with older workers having to stay in the workforce longer because they can't find real jobs.

1990-1992 was the last big recession. I remember there were 7 of us superintendants working on the only building we had on the books. The boss was low bidder on 3 projects, and the owners put off the projects for lack of funding. I wound up being laid off, being the shortest timer. Luckily, I got another position in about 6 weeks, but I really had to do a lot to convince the man I could make him more money. He put me on, and after 2 weeks came up to me and said his workforce was just too big, and it would have to be my last day. Working that day and discussing the situation with the other employees, two of them said they wished they could get laid off! You can bet I got right in the truck and let the man know the names of those two and that I would do as much work in a day as both of them! And I was there for another 12 years!

This economy is not only worse than it was back then, we have a "leader" who is doing everything possible to make things worse. Confidence is in the negative numbers these days...

I grant you some liberals have the work ethic but way too many liberals teach entitlement. And with that entitlement mentality taught to kids more times than not you get what you pay for.

It's not that I believe a large percentage of today's youths aren't lazy and demanding, but
I wonder how many of the jobs traditionally held by youth workers are now held by people who would otherwise be working in manufacturing?
