House Approves Subsidy For Ocean Downs

Bill would provide $1.2 million to track owned by Rickman

Maryland's House of Delegates narrowly approved a bill Saturday that would provide $1.2 million to the owner of a racetrack and casino on the Eastern Shore, setting aside objections from some lawmakers who called it a giveaway to the "one percent."

The bill would divert revenue earmarked for enhancing racing purses to provide operating assistance for the Ocean Downs Race Track, so long as the track has 40 live racing days. It is owned by William Rickman, a politically connected developer.

Rosecroft Raceway in Prince George's County would qualify for money only if it rehired about 300 workers who have been let go — a prospect lawmakers said was unlikely.

Everybody scroll down a few stories here and read.

"The Maryland Lottery, which administers the games, says the slots at Hollywood Casino Perryville brought in $12.2 million in March, while the slots at Casino at Ocean Downs near Ocean City generated a little more than $4 million."

So Ocean Downs is obviously in the poor house and struggling to put food on the table like we all are, right? They NEED this subsidy of our tax dollars just to survive, right?

How long until we can vote O'Malley out?

anonymous 9:00, O'Malley's term limit is up. You can't vote him out because he can't run again. Just so you know.

Good thing he can't run again. We would never survive it. Stop the subsidies at all levels. Just stop it now.

"..a panel of Maryland lawmakers made progress on Saturday on proposals to raise income taxes for people who make more than $100,000.00... and reduce an ongoing $1.1 billion deficit..."

So they can give it away to their racetrack buddies, eh?
I'm so glad I got out of Maryland. It's run by a group of total idiots.
There are great guys like Mike McDermott, but they just laugh at him and continue to fill their pockets.

You're in big trouble if you stay there. Don't say you can't move-- don't wait till the point when you won't be allowed to move.

This is business as usual with Maryland democrats.Tax the poor and give to the rich.

Is there a link so we can see just who vote to subsidize a casino?
Let the owner pay for his mistake himself.
This is the type of welfare that needs reform.
