Eric Bolling (Fox Business Channel's Follow the Money) test drove the Chevy Volt at the invitation of General Motors.
For four days in a row, the fully charged battery lasted only 25 miles before the Volt switched to the reserve gasoline engine.
Eric calculated the car got 30 mpg including the 25 miles it ran on the battery. So, the range including the 9 gallon gas tank and the 16 kwh battery is approximately 270 miles. It will take you 4 1/2 hours to drive 270 miles at 60 mph. Then add 10 hours to charge the battery and you have a total trip time of 14.5 hours. In a typical road trip your average speed (including charging time) would be 20 mph.
According to General Motors, the Volt battery holds 16 kwh of electricity. It takes a full 10 hours to charge a drained battery.
The cost for the electricity to charge the Volt is never mentioned so I looked up what I pay for electricity.
I pay approximately (it varies with amount used and the seasons) $1.16 per kwh.
16 kwh x $1.16 per kwh = $18.56 to charge the battery.
$18.56 per charge divided by 25 miles = $0.74 per mile to operate the Volt using the battery.
Compare this to a similar size car with a gasoline engine that gets 32 mpg.
$3.19 per gallon divided by 32 mpg = $0.10 per mile.
The gasoline powered car costs about $15,000 while the Volt costs $46,000.
So Obama wants us to pay 3 times as much for a car that costs more than 7 times as much to run and takes 3 times as long to drive across country.

The calculation is a little bit unfair. The Volt is meant as a commuter car and if you drive it 10 miles to work and 10 miles back each day it only costs three times as much to drive as a 30 mpg car at $4 per gallon. Oh and it still costs 7 times as much to buy. Unfair or not it still comes out stupid.

wanting American car makers to fail; i don't think so 8:35, but facts are facts. i have been in the auto industry for over 30 years and i can tell you without a shadow of a doubt: imports have been "on top" for all these 30 years. the quality is there and the repairs are so much less than domestic.
i think it's because of the unions. if anyone knows anything about unions; the quality of anything is sub-standard in a "union shop". the reasons are too numerous to list here.
The Volt is an expensive piece of junk and you and i paid for this trash. our children will be paying for it as well.

I think this type of technology needs to be refined and perfected, but there's no incentive to improve when the government subsidizes uncompetitive performance with purchase contracts.

This whole 'green' thing is getting way out of hand. These 'green' vehicles, where does electricity come from? It isn't cheap!!
'Green' pesticides--we are now dealing with pests that have not been a bother for many years because we could rid our business & homes of nasty little creatures. Those nasty little creatures are back because this 'green' crap isn't not effective (potent) enough to do the job. It cannot be healthy for humans to once again be in jeopardy of these creatures.
The folks that have come up with all this 'green' stuff must have been smoking some pretty good stuff

so you're saying that since I am an American that I must purchase American-made vehicles? That sounds silly. I buy vehicles that are well built, dependable and affordable. That is why I buy Toyotas. If and when U.S. auto manufactures make a better car for the same or lower cost then I will switch to American made automobiles. Chevy and Chrysler took bail outs and bankrupted themselves and still cannot produce a better car for cheaper. Why? Because of greedy union workers getting paid $60 an hour to stamp steel! The American auto industry will NEVER recover as long as unions have their way and continue to go under regulated.
The only American-made vehicles that I would be willing to buy at this time would be Ford. Ford is building quality, affordable vehicles and they did NOT take any BS hand-me-outs from OUR pockets! You want to talk about being an American?? What honest American would take hard earned money from other Americans?
So get off your "you're making the American auto industry fail" soap box. I'm not making it fail, they are!
