SALISBURY FIRE DEPARTMENT ADDS NEW TOY TO FLEET

Salisbury has added another special purpose Hackney to their fleet, this one for supplying high volume breathing air support and on-scene lighting.

The 12.75-ft body is mounted on a Freightliner M2 cab/chassis with Cummins ISC-330 engine; Allison 3000EVS transmission; 12,000# front axle and 23,000# rear axle.  Vertical exhaust prevent collection of noxious gases from accumulating beneath the awnings when they are deployed. Hackney’s exclusive drop/pinch frame was specified to permit mounting of the generator inside the left front compartment for protection against road spray.

The primary mission of the vehicle is to provide on-scene recharging of 4500 psi SCBA’s. That is accomplished using a Scott 26 cfm air compressor coupled with a RevolveAir fill station. The system permits a single operator to fill not less than 20 SCBA’s an hour, based on an average 500 psi residual. The rear compartment carries forty (40) spare SCBA bottles, making it highly unlikely that the department will ever deplete air supplies to firefighters.

Definately one of the better purchases SFD has made. The old Air-Light 2 was constantly breaking down, would always need a jump-start. It frequently helps other agencies (city pd and neighbor fd's) with lighting up scenes.

The printout shows it has multiple uses. As Sir Topum Hat says ...a very useful engine with high volume breathing air support, on-scene lighting and can get into and out of very tight locations. I expect when in use, which I see as frequent, people will be glad for this "toy", especially if it is called into service because of a dangerous situation involving our kin or friends.

Good God, is it ever going to end? Someone has simply forgot to tell the FD money is tight. How long since a pay raise?

I dont know why they need to fill air bottles when they dont go into any fires.

We are beginning to have the best supplied firefighters around. All we need now is a major fire to use all the equipment.

Volunteers, are you listening?

What a waste of good tax dollars.

If this was such a great purchase and the old unit was so bad then why are they keeping it for daily use?

This big truck is being used to fill air bottles just for fires? They never really go on fire calls because there rarely are any fire calls. They have been sending fire trucks to chase ambulance calls all morning. Why is a fire truck needed on and ambulance calls. This fire chief is worse than Hoppes and Gordy every was.

Maybe we need one of those air o planes that drops water on fires.

The City of Salisbury can't pay it's bills and on the verge of bankruptcy and they continue to gouge the tax payers. This is a sin and someone needs to be held accountable.

10:05 and 11:11 am must be fire department employees and not tax payers.

This tax money isn't coming out of Jeff Simpsons pocket so why does he care. Good Choice Jim. Can't wait till you come up for re-election!

Apparently you never had a keg lose pressure.

no price? most of the ones I have seen run upwards of $400,000 to $500,000. money spent for something that will never be used. I know at least one firehouse already has a compressor and fill station to fill these tanks. what a waste of our tax dollars!

Joe, please move this to the top. It gets lost and not everyone gets to see it. The public uses your blog to be informed on local issues. This waste of tax dollars is important.

No need to have put the flashing lights on it when we arent allowed to run light when it is called to the scene. We should have gotten a brush truck instead.

It doesn't have to make sense. Remember what he told us when we questioned the wasted tax dollars on nonessential overtime and the nonessential added manpower per shift, now 2 paid assistant's per shift, bigger staff than ever in the history of department, new uniforms, new patches, new badges, and the list could go on and on. "WE'VE GOT TO SPEND THIS MONEY OR THEY'LL CUT ME NEXT YEAR!"

He's no leader but he sure knows how to waste money and he must have other unknown qualities because when these things are reported to the Mayor and the Council it falls on deaf ears.

This guy is taking money under false pretences every time he accepts a paycheck for being the Fire Chief. He's alot of things but a fire chief he's not nor will he ever be! IT'S A DISGRACE!!!

I think they heard you and bought a new brush truck
