Yes, but we are losing ground FAST. Our attitude (lack of pride); our horrible school achievements and our health care system will be the ruin of us. Our children wil not live anywhere near the life we have. It will be like something out of a low grade movie. Watch and wait.
I wish I could say yes. I have seen this once great nation of ours quickly deteriorate. Things need to change immediately or we are in for a much larger problem than Nobama. I have spilled blood for this country as have many others and it is simply tragic what is happening right before our eyes!
No longer, our elected officials have sold us out. Taken prayer out of school, out of meetings and etc. Today is July 4th, our elected need to read about our for-fathers and what they gave up for our country. They forgot what this country came from, now we give it away. Lets be politically correct. Bull this is our country, what has the politically correct done for us!
I love this country but I have to say no. We are the greatest people in the world. We have the strongest military in the world. But as long as we continue to engage militarily in other nations we are wrong. As long as we try to force our form of democracy down the throats of people of other nations we are wrong. As long as we remove another country's leader and decide who leads next, we are wrong. As long as we spend money making sure the economies of foriegn nations remain viable when we have so many unemployed here, we are wrong. As long as our federal government continues to grow larger and continues it's increasing intrusion into the private lives of Americans, we are wrong. We have the potential to once more be the greatest nation on earth. But until we get back to our foundings based in individual freedoms and rights, we will continue to journey to socialism and tyranny, and the title "Greatest Nation on Earth" is a title our nation must wear as a medal given posthumously.
I agree with 12:06. America is not the greatest country on earth. She hasn't been for about 30 years, and she keeps deteriorating, i.e. our education results are not the best in the world.
As I was growing up (I'm in my late 60's now) I believed that we were the greatest. Not only did we have the greatest military power, but we were certainly by far financially the greatest. Our productivity, particularly manufactured goods, was far and above that of any other nation. We conquered space, giving us so much pride. We were the envy of nearly every other country in the world. So what happened? As pointed out by others above, our once-hallowed educational system scores way below that of many other, much smaller countries (Finland is near or at the top), we have almost no manufacturing, our economy is practically in shambles, and the plug has been pulled on the space program. We are looked down upon by so many other countries (Call it cockiness, as 12:06 did). Many of us are ashamed of what our country has become.
And yet, we as a nation are still hugely patriotic. We are a resilient people by and large. I still have an optimism that we will once more be the nation that so many have sought to come to. (Unfortunately, a great percentage do it illegally now, far different from the early 20th century).
So are we the greatest? As I think about all the other nations, big and small, I guess we still are the greatest. Let's hold on to that and build ourselves back up. We can start by changing presidents in 2012!
Those that do not believe so should go to the country they think is and make us an even better country.
Ask yourself, who we have a terrible illegal immigrant problem if we were as bad as some of these comments state? Why do people from all over the world still move here legally or otherwise? Why do American movies make billions of dollars all over the globe?
We are the greatest because we still inspire both ourselves and other countries to become greater than our collective selves. We formed a "more perfect union", but we are not perfect and instead continually strive to reach perfection. I don't agree with all of the decisions made at the top, but that really has nothing to do with this question.
America is the greatest because Americans have shown through our short history that we just plain kick butt at anything we set our hands to. When I look into the eyes of American children- my children and friends and family's children- I sense and see greatness.
Another thing for the haters- if you can't abide us at our worst then you don't deserve us at our best.
The problem that you are picking up on is jobs, but what has happened (independent of this current downturn) is we have innovated. Where our factories used to need 1,000 workers to produce a good, we now need 100. So when you consider output via unemployment percentage (which is a terrible way to measure it) you get the FEELING that America has slid, but we haven't. Our problem is we have probably added too many machines and efficient processes too quickly. This has lead to massive profits for American corporations like Microsoft, but has really hurt our middle class.
Despite perceptions that the nation is losing its competitive edge, the United States remains the dominant leader in science and technology worldwide, according to a RAND Corporation study issued today.
I believe its the greediest nation on earth. I believe we could be the greatest nation but with corruption in the government and the justice system allowing criminals to walk free, we are self destructing and will be the most hated and the most worthless nation with in a 100 more years IF it isnt corrected now! We are backwards. Pay sports players 30 million a year while teachers and cops are paid less than $30,000.
Hey haters- don't let the FACTS get the way of your false assumptions!
Americans make up less than 5% of the world's population, yet the U.S. leads the world in Nobel Prize-winners (296), the number of billionaires (371), and the number of gold medals (36) and total medals (102) earned in the 2004 summer Olympics. We grant the most patents and produce the most energy and electricity. We have the most Internet users (205,327,000) and the most roads (3.98 million miles), airports (14,858) and railway tracks (140,805 miles).
In some cases, the United States so dominates economic fields that we are both the leading exporter and the leading importer. Examples include firearms and ammunition, fertilizers, fruits and nuts, engines and motors, musical instruments and medical instruments, pyrotechnics and explosives, and radioactive materials.
The U.S. has the largest gross domestic product ($13.3 trillion) and the largest gold reserves (worth nearly $158 billion).
We are first (with at least 20 other countries) in terms of our citizens having access to clean water and sanitation facilities.
The United States is the greatest nation on this planet, but is under attack from within. We have elected the enemy as our leader. The exceptionism of this country is under full scale attack. The beacon of freedom that people all around the world look to us for is eroding under this marxist and chief. This President is surrounded by people that want to install a totalitarian government and destry what this nation stands for. The willing sheeple just want another free handout from Uncle Sam, unfortunatly, that handout comes with shackles.
3:06 Greediest? We have led the WORLD in GIVING to places like Japan, Haiti and Indonesia during their times of crisis. How does this equal greed? We continually give of ourselves to nations through charity and "foreign aide" and under President Bush pledged BILLIONS to Africa to help their countries battle the AIDS epidemic there. Name and disaster and our people were/are there to help armed with doctors, food, clean water, medicine etc... and we ask for NOTHING in return!?!?!
Where did the Red Cross begin? United Nations? Peace Corps?
We continually give! I find it odd that our own people fail to recognize all that we do for the world. It is truly as baffling as it is just plain sad.
3:25 the pay issue has to do with the market and not America. A professional athlete making millions of dollars is one of the best in his field IN THE WORLD! You should look up how much football/soccer players make in Europe- hint more than ball players make here. Anyways, back to your statement. If teachers, etc... demostrated that they were the best IN THE WORLD and could market their skills as such they could likewise make millions! Don't blame the athletes for what they make for every one of them making millions there are millions who fail to make it. They only make that much because of the free market- it has nothing to do with America other than the fact that we supply a free market to allow people to work hard and aspire to EARN as much as they can according to their hard work, intellect and a good break here and there.
You stand to be corrected. We are not - I repeat - we are not the leaders of the world in technology.
Any nation who loses its manufacturing base - (like the US) - loses its technological edge. We have already lost our technological edge. Believe me - my Degree is in Electronic Engineering Technology and I can tell you first hand that we are no longer the dominant economy you think we are.
And one more thing - how can a nation like ours pay 99 weeks of unemployment - (almost 2 years) - for not working. Try and reason out that fact. Do you have any idea what that does to a country's work ethic?
A nation cannot integrate a 99 week unemployed individual back into a productive workforce. It just doesn't happen.
Bottom line - the US has gone to the dogs under this administration. And the way I see things - it will take decades to re-emerge as a power house if ever.
The survey question asks if we think the US is the GREATEST country in the world. The obvious question we ask ourselves is what we mean by "greatness." How do we measure it? By our educational system? By our technology? By our exports? By our GDP? By the average wage of our residents? Or do we measure greatness by our inclusion policies? How do we treat each other? How are we seen by the rest of the world? So many factors come together to form "greatness." I do agree that this administration has done so much to reduce our greatness. I fear that China will very soon overtake us, if they haven't yet, to become the greatest as we measure it.
It is just the culmination of refugees from failed empires and being the last it is failing itself a prescription drug addled obese population with nationalistic Disenyesque delusions only on par with biblical fantasy addicted to shopping and buying the crap they should humble their expectations and should be for making pennies themselves America is due for a huge wake up call you can wave the flag and stuff your pie hole with hot dogs but you have not seen Nationalism yet.....and guess what there will not be one thing you can do about it...but wave flags and stuff your pie hole and pretend everything is ok..............very much like the last 30 years the population has been split with petty emotional issues whilst the foxes robbed the hen house....there are no conservatives or liberals those are all stances adopted by people that think they are not getting what they deserve guess what........none of us deserve anything the whole lot has been sold down stream your politics and values are not an economic model and there is no American dream it has always been a point of sale
5:59 you aren't attempting to contradict me, but a study by RAND that was cited in the comment.
Where is your study or citation?
While you produce opinion backed up by more opinion I actually researched the topic and brought some evidence that supported my point.
I would think a person with an Associates in Electronic Engineering Technology from the University of Phoenix would come to the table with more than conjecture, ad hominem attacks and a strawman argument.
Beezer the whole entry from 3:22 was a quote from the article whose link appears at the bottom. You aren't really arguing with 3:22 but the study. Did you even bother to read the study? Didn't think so.
7:35, if we measure the greatness of a country by its people, how would your comment square with that? If someone doesn't like the country or something about it, do we tell him or her to leave?
I am 72 years old! Growing up in the 50's was the best time of all. I served in the military as a young man for 10 yrs. My heart breaks when I see what has happened to my beloved America. How sad it is when Political Correct makes things like saying God or referring to your religious beliefs almost illegal. What a shame! I hope to live long enough to see USA be what it once was and that the citizens of this great country realize how lucky they are to be living here.
I'm just a few years younger than 10:41. I can't add a thing to what he has written. Back in that era we were the envy of the world. Look what's happened. I, too, hope to live long enough to see a reversal.
If you don't think education is a problem just look at the support the teachers union is already throwing behind the administration which has taken us to the brink of ruin in three years. Our great nation cannot withstand another term of this socialistic administration! If educators are so smart why can't they see they are like sheep being led to the slaughter.

It was at one time. But now we are a laughing stock.

This is now a muslim country thanks to all the liberal democrats.

1:32 the notion that the USA does not "make anything any more" or as you state "have almost no manufacturing" is totally false.
This stat that was released last year states that we STILL lead the world in manufacturing:

Our's is an ugly Nation of Imperialistic Ideals and a master plan to enslave all the Nations of the Earth. We are Israel.
Our Country is better at killing than any Nation on the planet. We are feared. We take what we need and leave the rest destitute.

NO. The politicians are destroying what's left of this country.
The police are out of control. They view us as the enemy and have their boot against our throats.
Our foreign policies and actions are pissing the rest of the world off and turning many against us.
The powers that be manipulate the economy so we will accept any 'relief' that comes down the pike.
We are kept busy at each others throats and trying to pay taxes so we won't notice what Washington is up to.
We were once feared and respected. Now we are a laughing stock and irrelevant.

@7:57......"strawman arguement"????
That's funny coming from someone using an article cated June of 2008.....
9:40 you should know legit financials do not come out in real time when the scope includes the comparison of several economies.
