Fake Rentals Ruin Beachgoers' Vacations

Police: Scams Originate Overseas

OCEAN CITY, Md. -- Some Marylanders saving for a beach vacation have ultimately learned the rental they secured doesn't really exist or was never available to rent.

Getting burned at the ocean has taken on a whole new meaning. Becky Ray, of Parkville, told the WBAL-TV 11 News I-Team that she had her eye on a three-bedroom Ocean City condominium that she found on Craigslist. She said she quickly contacted the individual who posted the ad.

"The price was good. The picture looked beautiful. It was oceanfront, right in the location. It was everything we were looking for," said Becky Ray, of Parkville.
In an email to Ray, a woman identifying herself as Lisa said she was the "agent for the rightful owner of the house," and despite the short notice of just a couple of days, the house was still "available."

A lot of people who are too trusting get burned on Craigslist. This woman would probably buy a vehicle for 1/4 of kbb from a soon to be deployed service member sight unseen. Go through a reputable property management company, or try FRBO.com(for rent by owner), a reputable site I've used before. Yeah, you can find a good deal on Craigslist, but you have to do your due deligence. I do a good amount of dealing on CL, and have had my share of fake checks/money orders come my way. Even some FedEx'd overnight turned out to be fakes. But I haven't been burned once.

That's what they get for messing with craigslist.

this person wasnt burned...she did a ton of detective work. I think the point of the story was to let others know that this was going on..so they didnt get caught in the same trap. Obviously these scammers use CL because it works. Its unfortunate. Hopefully they use the money to feed their kids...but I have a feeling they are living it up somewhere!

It's ADS. And what the heck does 'LOL is free so its a spammers delight' mean?

That's not only mean but immature and juvenile. If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything. Makes the world a much better place.
