Harry Truman was a different kind of President. He probably made as many, or more, important decisions regarding our nation's history as any of the other 42 Presidents preceding him. However, a measure of his greatness may rest on what he did after he left the White House.
The only asset he had when he died was the house he lived in, which was in Independence Missouri . His wife had inherited the house from her mother and father and other than their years in the White House, they lived their entire lives there.
When he retired from office in 1952, his income was a U.S. Army pension reported to have been $13,507.72 a year. Congress, noting that he was paying for his stamps and personally licking them, granted him an 'allowance' and, later, a retroactive pension of $25,000 per year.
After President Eisenhower was inaugurated, Harry and Bess drove home to Missouri by themselves. There was no Secret Service following them.
When offered corporate positions at large salaries, he declined, stating, "You don't want me. You want the office of the President, and that doesn't belong to me. It belongs to the American people and it's not for sale.."
Even later, on May 6, 1971, when Congress was preparing to award him the Medal of Honor on his 87th birthday, he refused to accept it, writing, "I don't consider that I have done anything which should be the reason for any award, Congressional or otherwise."
As president he paid for all of his own travel expenses and food.
Modern politicians have found a new level of success in cashing in on the Presidency, resulting in untold wealth. Today, many in Congress also have found a way to become quite wealthy while enjoying the fruits of their offices. Political offices are now for sale. (e.g. Illinois )
Good old Harry Truman was correct when he observed, "My choices in life were either to be a piano player in a whorehouse or a politician. And to tell the truth, there's hardly any difference!
I say dig him up and clone him!!

42 preceding him? How come we're on #44 now?
Alex, LOL, caught that, too.
Truman was always one of my favorites in history. Not a politician, but a public servant.
He rounded up & sent hundreds of thousands of illegal Mexicans back to Mexico in cattle cars in his "Operation Wet Back." Clone him NOW!
Also, Muslim terrorists wouldn't be so bold if President Truman were in office. After 9/11, he would have turned a couple hundred million of the screaming dogs to vapor. Terrorist problem solved & Iran would now be a nice parking lot for Israel!
They don't make politicians like Truman anymore. The ones we have now are hatched from rubbery eggs, not born.
I love the piano player quote. Wish we had a few politicians like Harry Truman today!
He was a Democrat, you know...

Doesn't matter the party, we need politicians of his character. I don't vote party line blindly and neither should anyone else. However, nobody is offering up anything worthy these last few generations.
Dan,
President Truman nuked our mortal enemy into submission and sent job stealing ILLEGAL Mexicans packing in cattle cars. So we can overlook Mr. Truman's unfortunate choice of party affiliation, But, really, there's not a Democrat or Republican presidential candidate who cares enough about legal American citizens and soldiers to do that now! The Republicans scream about the unfairness of illegals stealing American jobs. But when they controlled the White house and the legislature they did NOTHING, ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about it, just like the Democrats. And the Democrats screamed about the unnecessary infringement on the privacy of American Citizens when Bush got the Patriot Act Passed. But did the Democrats repeal it when Obama was elected and Democrats controlled the House & Senate? Hell no! They now use it just like the Republicans to spy on citizens and political opposition. When the Bush administration raised the debt ceiling, many democrats, Senator Obama among them, voted NO! Now President Obama wants to raise the debt ceiling and the Republicans are screaming NO. It's all a sickening political game to those elected by us. They are sophists who switch sides on issues & distort the truth. But the American voter doesn't seem to notice; they just vote for their chosen party because "they are for us." (Bull Poop)! It's a well rehearse game, and Republican & Democratic politicians are sickeningly alike in playing it, and neither side represents the American citizen. They represent the special interest groups!
During the campaign, Obama pledged to help American workers by repealing NAFTA and similar trade atrocities. Did he? Hell no; you don't hear a peep out him now about it. Just like the Republicans, the Democrats are bought and paid for and do what they are told by special interests. The motto of both parties seems to be to hell with the American citizen, what's in it for me! There are no Harry Trumans on the horizon.
A very HUMBLE & TRUTHFUL man, two qualities you will not find in a politician today!!
President Truman did what he had to do, saved untold lives, not just American, but those of our enemies at the time as well.
It was a hard choice. I'm so very glad he was the one who had the integrity to make that decision. Too many waffle, worry, wonder what other will 'think of him' afterwards.
He did his job, did it with integrity and felt the pain of his decisions but didn't flinch about making them.
A great man! Current politicians should be more like him.
And remember that he had a sign on his desk: "The buck stops here." He took responsibility.
Tal: Oh we notice! I feel powerless to change the political environment we live in. They are all self serving - liars in my eyes. Both parties are guilty of the same thing. Someday, there will be a brave soul who leads with integrity and brings this country back to its former glory. I hope....
