154 Lower Shore Non-Profits Lose Tax-Exempt Status

On Friday the IRS released nationwide lists of non-profit organizations which have lost their tax-exempt status.  Among these are over 6,100 Maryland non-profits.  154 organizations whose zip code begins with 218 (the three Lower Shore Counties of Somerset, Wicomico, and Worcester) have lost their tax-exempt status.

Included in this list are several American Legion posts.  For a complete list, CLICK HERE.

I wonder if this was due to a change in IRS requirements to be tax exempt, or if it was people not following by the rules, whose org. had begun to take on for profit characteristics. I noticed that there are many listed whose address is inside of expensive subdivisons. I tried to look through the list, but it isn't sortable. Which American Legions lost it?

So much fraud these days is why I no longer make any donations to any organization that uses call centers to call my home. If the charity is that worth while, they would have volunteers.

So many scams are sad, but a fact.

A nonprofit cannot be an action organization which means it cannot try to influence politics or legislation. You can assume that the 154 organizations in the zip code area of 218 has been lost due to the corrupt politics of the historical administrations and all of the ties they have. Also, there is a fine line where you have to watch for profit activities that the organization may offer for your skills and make sure you offer your services at a lower rate and in return you and the organization claim use your inkind volunteer $$ on your personal taxes and their inkind match requirements. It becomes a win win situation.

No you can't sort a pdf file; however you can use the search function and search for American Legion and just keep using find next. Looks like all of the AL on the shore that I'm familiar with through...wow.

Anon 1102 here.

I don't know if this will work, but here is a link to all states. You can download an excel file that is sortable if you want. IRS.gov has all the info right on the home page.

these people on this list didn't lose their status because of something that they did or didn't do...most of them just have simply not renewed yet. If they were to pay the fee's today they would immediately be taken off the list.
It's kinda like Joe waiting till the last minute to pay his property taxes...he will be on the list until he pays.

Anon 0102 -

Not really. I just assume you wanted to get a dig in against Albero. That's fine.

This was something the IRS has been working on for quite a while. I can't even remember how many there are across the whole country.

These organizations didn't file their required paperwork (like their 990, which is the non-profit equivalent of an 1120 - income tax return for a business). NO, they don't get their tax-exempt status back by paying a fee. I may take weeks, months or years for some of these organizations to regain their tax-exempt status. Some may decide that it isn't worth the effort. Some may have to fold because they won't be able to stay afloat without their tax-exempt status.
