RICK POLLITT: CALL JIM PERDUE NOW!
We may be seeing the first stage of the relocation of Perdue’s corporate headquarters from Wicomico County to Sussex County. It needs to be dealt with, pronto, and if possible cancelled. No matter how they spin it, the shift just announced is trouble for Wicomico County.
And Mr/ Pollitt should have seen this (or something similar) coming when Jim Perdue supported Joe Ollinger in the recent campaign for County Executive. But, better late than never, and he should be able to get major state support from his pal O’Malley.
Don’t delay, Rick – do it now. And don’t send Fineran or Shea to try to plug this hole, because it’s just too damn big.

Why would any company stay in Maryland. Dont blame Pollitt try Erlich and O'Malley. The worst state in the U.S. to locate a business. They both have a role in this mess. I am shocked he did not move it to North Carolina.
I guess it is Pollitt's fault that in the last ten years Salisbury has lost Crown, Dresser, K&L, Comtek etc. ect. You get the point. There has not been a major business attracted to this area in a long time.
By the way the fact that Jim backed Ollinger tells me the right person won. Perdue is about making Perdue rich. Ask Jim's employees how much of the wealth they are seeing ?
The Eastern Shore of De. & Md. have the highest cancer rate in America. Thanks Jim. The nitrates the chicken houses produce has ruined rivers and drinking water.

It's not just Perdue corporate and it's family. Maryland is not business friendly - that's why new stuff doesn't come here. There aren't many major employers on the Eastern Shore any more and the ones here can't keep (or aren't willing to keep) their folks from leaving.
In fact it is just that, the city and county... They have caused an un- wanted attraction that makes people not want to come here... I work for a engineering firm here in the sby and I knew of 3 or 4 great business proposals for a new lavish pool center, basically same to those of YMCA but better... Also they were talks of bringing a few restaurants here but since they wouldn't allow for a sign the city and or county denied them, so they will never come to sby as they stated... Lastly there was talks of a professional hockey team to be re-located here in sby but due to the loops you have to jump through for county and city, they said f* sby, I will go where I am wanted...
It's not maryland, its sby and the surrounding area... Not to mention O'faily keeps everything in his home town of the b-more area and doesn't bring any of it to sby or this side of the bridge..
10:49 Your just full of it. There are lands in western Wicomico County that have never had chicken manure spread on them and the nitrates are still high. Some of the nitrates on the land are naturally high.
Pollitt would be wasting his time -- Perdue backed Ehrlich big time!
who cares! the politicians have made a mess of things. you fools keep sending the same inept crew back to annapolis and the statehouse again and again. Purdue is only doing what rich people can afford to do, move! it's the rest of us who are not so fortunate!

I am a builder and have witnessed a couple of businesses get turned down. I even witnessed one A/E firm tell a franchiser who was scoping out retail locations "unless you go through us, you wont get approval".
They almost closed the Salisbury plant recently due to the City's water policy...the county requirements for new construction are kinda....stupid....couple that with the state's anti-business policies.
11:17 I think you are mistaken. The fields are treated with chicken manure all over this county. The same water tables travel the county. I guess the western end has a seperate eco system lol. Why do you think the EPA controls the amount of chicken manure that can be left in one place for any period of time.
Sad fact is it is a billion dollar industry with no way to rid the waste.
As for the high paying jobs being lost I would guess the people are not going to give up their careers. Delaware is a short commute. Hopefully they would continue to reside in Maryland. I also noticed at least half live in Delaware already.
Something needs to be done to atrrack industry. We are losing all the way around.

In case you haven't noticed, many higher income folks have already moved to Sussex and Worcester.We have been experiencing a migration of high income out of Wicomico for some years now.

This is just the first step. Ten - fifteen years from now the old family homestead will be all that's left of Perdure in Salisbury.
1:48 Don't feed me that. There is a sandhill ouside of Sharptown that has never had chickem manure on it and 2 feet down the nutrients are as high as fields that have had it spread on them. Believe me, the water table under that sandhill doesn't bring nutrients to that sand. And yes the eco system on the west side of the county is different from the east side.
2:29 that is easy. The transient population. We do not need anymore retail or minium wage employers. We need industry that pays well and provides for the workers. All the career type employers are leaving.
I guess I am stupid but since the tax cap things have gotten worse here. I do not know if it is a direct reflection of the cap or not. I only know what I see.
Hey Westsider I got some bottled water from a well next door to a chicken house want to buy it. Its called turd water and taste great, less filling. I do agree the chicken industry is much needed, but say what you want the seepage can not be good for anyone. The feed used produces freak results. Have you ever seen a chicken with wings bigger than an infants arms i.e. the OVEN STUFFER. The steroids and other chemicals used to grow chickens can not be good. The waste has to be worse.
5:38 Blame it all on the farmers. If your so concerned about seepage, where do you think the nutrients from all the septic tanks on the shore goes?
Did it ever dawn on anyone that Perdue has had a major presence in Delaware for Decades. Feed Mills, Processing plants, a large number of growers. Delaware is Business and Agriculture Friendly. I am sure Delaware let Perdue know how much they would appreciate some white collar offices. Maryland is not business or Agriculture Friendly. Us Tax payers in Wicomico County should be thankful that Perdue has not moved more of it's operation across the State Line. Look at all of the Construction equipment companies who left Maryland and are now in Delmar.
The people who will work in these new offices will soon discover that Delaware Schools are equal to or superior to Maryland Schools, enjoy lower property taxes, a more equal type sales tax/gross revenue tax.
I don't blame Perdue. Hate to see it but don't blame them.
This is a major wake up call, hope everyone is listening.
5:38...the "transient population" .I take it you are not in retail or hospitality. Both are driven by the local population ...in case you havent noticed, the tansients take the bypass around Salisbury.
Now explain to me why employers with high paying jobs are going to locate here? Since that hasn't happened for at least 3 decades, what makes you think it will happen now....remember the definition of insanity...doing the same hting over and over and expecting different results.
SWED needs to totally recalibrate its mission and focus on economic development that is plausible.
