While the General Manager desperately tried to convince Giant Corporate Offices to make an exception to the ALL Volunteer Bell Ringers here in Salisbury, Corporate has said, NO.
As I'm sure many of you know, the Giant location played a huge role in the SA's annual success and this will hurt deeply. Rather than allowing the SA to ring 6 days a week, Giant will only allow somewhere near 4 days for few hours for the entire season.
I'm told the Hallmark Store right next to Giant will allow Bell Ringers there instead, so please make the effort to stop by and make a donation.

Joe - We should all contact the Corporate office in Landover. We are NOT like the cities on which they based this decision. If a lot of us called them maybe they would listen.
They should not be hurting the Salvation Army this way. I wonder if they know that Jim Perdue is one of the kettle drive chairmen?
I understand that the local managers really tried to make this happen because they understand how much it means to the community. It is the corporate people who need to know how we feel.
the hell with them. Wal Mart's grocery prices are a heckuva lot cheaper anyway. Goodbye Giant.
This is just terrible. Giant was a very busy spot - I know I've rung there before. I am sure it is a big loss to the Salvation Army.
Other businesses should step up and offer their locations. There are plenty of restaurants that are very busy this time of year.
Let's show our community support of the Salvation Army - they need the funds to help those who are desperate for help this Christmas season. Let's all make a big effort to make up for the loss of Giant.
BTW - We need to let the Corporate office of Giant know what a terrible thing they've done.
What was the reason given for not allowing the ringers more time?
What I heard is that Giant made this decision because they hire people to ring bells in the cities and some of them are not very desirable people.
That is not the case here. The local Salvation Army has well known people leading the campaign and all volunteers who ring. Have you seen the list of businesses and other groups that have volunteered that Joe posted earlier? It is amazing.
Shame on Giant for being so rigid. One size doesn't always fit all!!!!
BAD, BAD decision!!!!
Like the economy is not bad enough for people now this. Shame on Giant!!!
I will not be shopping at Giant ever again. Food Lion will have the bulk of my business. If people would get together and avoid Giant, it might make a difference. It's not like you'll starve to death if you don't go to Giant. You just might save a few bucks.
Just went on Giant's site and left them a 'BAH HUMBUG Giant' message on their customer service link. Suggest all do the same.
I will take my business to SuperFresh
they allow Salvation bell ringers there, I hope everybody will support store that support our community! Shame on you Giant
SAdly this is not the same Family owned giant that it had been for years, Its been bought out by a conglomerate of Grocery Stores, that only look at numbers and not People,
What a shame.
But I will still shop there... Still the Best Around...Sadley...
Shame on corporate. I will still shop at Giant since our local families work there and need our business to keep their jobs. They were not the ones that made this decision.
Giant's 'corporate' owner is (or was) Royal Ahold in Holland.
They couldn't care less about us here on the shore.
In most ways I agree with giant. They are not allowing bell ringers because in some states the ringers are paid. Now if we were such an area, people would be beside them selves and boycott giant. So instead of picking certain area's that made it a blanket policy across the boards. Makes sense in a business aspect, and that is what Giant is, a business.
Personally i would rather be set on fire than shop at walmart, but that is my perogative.
Giant you will still have my business!
I dont shop at Giant anyway. This just solidifies my feelings about Giant. Its no loss Joe. The upscale crowd that shops there gives less anyway. The middle to lower class that frequent Walmarts and Super Fresh traditionally give the most. Those who can least afford to give the most.
They have lost my business all together. I will drive the extra mile to shop elsewhere. The Salvation Army is a fantastic organization.
Boycott Giant! They boycotted the Salvation Army.

If the reason they are not letting the Salvation army there is because they hire undesirable people, why are they letting them ring the bell other days. Corporate should let the Managers of the stores decide and not group all stores into a group. If an undesirable shows up the manger phones the Salvation army and lets them know. Problem solved and Giant doesn't get bad publicity because of it.
You want to know what I think of Giant.
Well I'm going to tell you so listen carefully.
Remember when Giant decided to sign a pre-lease for the old Superfresh store - adjacent to Wal-mart. Well I telephoned SuperG's management and informed them that they were about to make a multi-million dollar mistake. The General manager went on to explain that they knew exactly what the projected revenues would be - '300k per week'.
Well guess what - they never met their projections and eventually went out of business. Now you tell me - only a quack would locate a Giant next to Wal-mart.
Last year Gander Mountain unceremonously booted the bell ringers from their store. Now Giant has cut their hours at their store.Haven't been back to Gander Mountain ( and I spend a few dollars on my favorite sports)since, and am done with Giant.Sad commentary that these large businesses would shun the people working exclusively for the under priviledged.
I don't shop at Giant anyway. Superfresh blows them away on prices.
My craplist of stores
1. Target(they dont support veterans)
2. Giant(this)
