Ahead of Hurricane Earl, Virginia's governor plans to declare an emergency Wednesday.
BRISTOL, Va. (AP) - A hurricane watch has been issued for Virginia's coast as Hurricane Earl weakens to a Category 3 storm.
A watch is already posted along the North Carolina coast and evacuations have been ordered for Ocracoke Island.
Earl's maximum sustained winds have decreased to near 125 mph. But the National Hurricane Center in Miami says fluctuations in strength are possible over the next 48 hours.
Ahead of Earl, Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell planned to declare an emergency in Virginia Wednesday, giving the National Guard and state police time to prepare for the storm.
The governor said after the last of his eight statewide government reform town hall forums Tuesday night that the latest National Weather Service tracks put the eye of the powerful storm about 200 miles east of Virginia Beach.

This is really throwing a wrench into my upcoming annual Hatteras vacation. But, usually after a big storm the fishing is better and the sea shell picking is as well. Hopefully we'll get down there.
emergency? why do public officials always go crazy when a little rain starts to fall? if you want to issue a "look out, possible big rain" warning, thats one thing. however, to always say "this is the big one ethel!" is gettig a little ridiculous.

The problem is the local officials don't know what the plans are for the guys up in Anchorage Alaska where the weather is being controlled.
If we knew what HAARP was going to do to the jet stream tomorrow, we would be able to prepare.

Everybody complains. Look, it's been a Category 4 storm, very serious. Hurricanes are not totally predictable. This close to VA and MD, a slight turn and we'll get a direct hit.
Then 10:03 will be complaining that the government didn't do enough to warn people.
Having been through a big one where we had no power for 6 days, you can complain all you want. The storm only did a little damage to our property itself, but the infrastructure took a beating.
I stay prepared instead of complaining.
