NAACP Condemns Racism In Tea Party

Political movement members deny bigotry

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Leaders of the country's largest civil rights organization accused tea party activists on Tuesday of tolerating bigotry and approved a resolution condemning racism within the political movement.

The resolution was adopted during the annual convention in Kansas City of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, spokesman Chris Fleming said. Local tea party organizers disputed claims of racism and called on the NAACP to withdraw the resolution.
It was not immediately clear how the resolution was amended during the debate, which was mostly closed to the public.

The original called for the NAACP to "educate its membership and the community that this movement is not just about higher taxes and limited government." It suggested that something could evolve "and become more dangerous for that small percentage of people that really think our country has been taken away from them."

"We felt the time had come to stand up and say, 'It's time for the tea party to be responsible members of this democracy and make sure they don't tolerate bigots or bigotry among their members,'" NAACP President Ben Jealous said ahead of the debate. "We don't have a problem with the tea party's existence. We have an issue with their acceptance and welcoming of white supremacists into their organizations."

Activist denies racism Tea party activist Alex Poulter, who co-founded a Kansas City-area group called Political Chips, disputed the allegations. He said the movement is made up of a "diverse group of folks who are upset with what is going on with this country."

Poulter said he has seen no evidence of racism within the movement.

Is this the same NAACP whom won't acknowledge the New Black Panthers as a hate group?

The naacp is becoming totally irrelovent. Whenever I hear they are involved in something, the story looses all credibilty. They are nothing more than professional racists preaching to the rest of the world about the evils of racism. I hope this idiotic stunt will open some eyes to that fact.

It looks like your "irrelovent" comment "looses" itself in your IRRELEVANT brain.
I hope 9:49 LOSES his ability to be stupid.

Just like the Attorney General and the Justice Department, who are SUPPOSED to enforce the laws of this country EQUALLY and without regard to race, the NAACP only sees WHITE people doing things they perceive to be racist. Black thugs can stand in front of voting booths and intimidate (with weapons in hand) white people and our Justice Dept says there is NOT ENOUGH EVIDENCE to support prosecution??! And the NAACP says nothing about THAT! And now, the NAACP says that people who have POLITICAL views that don't agree with theirs are RACIST?? And the President's wife speaks at their convention?? Lower taxes and less spending is a RACIST ideology??? In what reality???

In response to 10:31-I guess there are some people who will never be able to see the forest for the trees.

I've heard (listened to) some speakers from the NAACP and Ben Jealous's statement that he questions the entrance of "white supremists" into the tea party makes me wonder what he thinks about black people who openly denigrate white people becoming members of the NAACP??? And with a multitude of black millionaires and a black middle class growing at such a fast clip (I know, Lebron James' $100 million dollar contract was just a slave's wage), and a black President elected by a WHITE majority and a huge number of black mayors and congressman, how long will the NAACP even be a relevant organization?? And how long can they continue to realistically whine about the poor conditions and oppressive nature of their very existence in this black-hating country?
