Wicomico County Executive Richard M. Pollitt, Jr., announced today that immediate traffic control procedures will be initiated on the portion of Glen Avenue directly north of the Wicomico Youth & Center by prohibiting vehicular traffic before, during and after major Civic Center events. The action follows two hit and run accidents on March 12th, involving pedestrians crossing Glen Avenue from the old mall parking lot to the Civic Center.
“We can’t delay on taking measures to insure the safety of our Civic Center patrons,” said Pollitt. “Stopping traffic on Glen Avenue is the quickest, cheapest way to make sure that our patrons can cross over to the Civic Center in safety. When we own that parking lot, we shall make improvements and pedestrian safety will be chief among them. We need, however, to do something now.”
The old mall parking lot is not owned by Wicomico County but Civic Center patrons have been using it for overflow parking. Among the upcoming major events scheduled for the arena are Bill Cosby, the annual poodle show, high school and Salisbury University graduations and the Fernando Guerrero boxing match.

AND we are looking forward to Ringling Bros Circus on April 3rd taking our wonderful grandkids to see it. SO, we will cross the street with extreme caution.
The Ringling Bros. Circus is coming also Apri 1,2,3,& 4 also.
hmm... my crystal ball tells me that more "grant" money will appear magically out of nowhere to build a pedestrian overpass /skywalk - all this wasted money for a building that "they" want to get rid of, remember the new civic center task force??
I really doubt that.
The $1.5 million we spent was tax money, not your money; course now we got to add upgrades, protection, insurance, maintenance - ya da da da da - exceeding the $1.5 money you didn't spend to support it. Can't we get rid or Rick P sooner?
There are ways to make this safer that wont really cost that much money.
Deputies will be assigned to stop traffic so pedestrians can cross safely.
the next safety measure will be a couple million of your tax payer dollars for a tunnel under glen avenue. but, anyone with any sense knows that was planned before they bought the property.
but you let them get away with it.
every council person and pollitt have to go this round of elections. they spend money just like obama. like drunken sailors. only drunken sailors at least have the money in their pocket.
this county is broke, unless your a teacher.
7:09 Teachers do not make high salaries. What rock did you crawl out from under? They need to be paid a lot more for the crap they have to put up in today's world. Teachers also pay out of pocket to buy their own supplies which I am sure you do not have to do in your workplace. Many also volunteer their time mentoring or coaching or tutoring or taking classes. Many buy items out of pocket for needy students. What does this topic even have to do w/the post??
This proves the point I raised when the accidents occured, when I stated the County / Civic Center were liable for the safety and security of the ones attending these activities. Lawyer up for medical expenses.
