Wal-Mart Cutting 10,000 Jobs At Sam’s Club
Amount is about nine percent of the staff at warehouse club retailer
NEW YORK - Wal-Mart Stores Inc. said Sunday it is cutting more than 10,000 jobs at Sam's Club, representing about 9 percent of the warehouse club operator's staff, as it outsources its product-sampling department to marketing company Shopper Events and eliminates another unit.
"Our demos can be a competitive advantage and we want to take this member experience to the next level," said Sam's Club CEO Brian Cornell in a memo to staffers.
Employees were told the news at mandatory meetings on Sunday morning.

They lost a lot of money from this household this year after what they did to Joe.
They lost a ton of money from us too. There are certain items we purchase from Sam's Club but now we shop elsewhere for the most part.
I've switched to. With sales tax escalating to 6% - we now drive to Delaware for most of our big ticketed goods.
I just bought a new desktop computer and monitor a few days ago and decided to drive to Best Buy in Dover. While I was there I saw another Salisbury resident picking up a new refrigerator from Best Buy in Dover.
There's a BJ's Club in Millsboro and, unlike Sam's Club, it doesn't have long lines! They also have a liquor store, gas station, and tire center. Seems like they have better quality stuff, too.
I feel sorry for the old lady's that will be out of a job. It must be really hard to get work at 75.
Maybe it's just me? I think it is terrible to have to sign up and pay a membership to join ANY company for the privelege of shopping there. I like the idea of bulk but as a single person, it is not feasable. However, when I HAVE been in Sam's Club, I saw a lot of things I would buy but as a non member, was not allowed to. So, Walmart also lost my money because I would go elsewheres. Just MY opinion.
What is going on in this country
Living is this area why would anyone buy a major item in MD? I'll go to DE for everything if I can just save a little, that 6% tax just drives me crazy, thanks O'Malley.
So basically, Sam's is getting rid of all of their part-timers and the people who do product sampling. The sampling might be a good idea since the server will be able to answer questions you have on the product, because the people doing it now has no clue. I went in about 3 months ago, and the sampler tried to give me a sample of the laundry detergent, and I said no thanks i already have bought some. She then asked me real quiet "Does it work? How does it smell? and how does it compare to Tide?" What?, shoudn't you know that? I told her to sell it as cheaper than Tide but is comparable: it already said that on the package. I walked back around later, and that's how she was selling it, and selling a ton.
To survive, Sam's needs to copy Costco and BJ's by having sell items and temporary price cuts on books, and movies and TV's.
5:37, "what's going on in this country?" Today, I drove down Northwood Drive from Car Care towards Lowes. What a sad, scary sight to see an endless row of "available, reduced, or will build to suit" signs. As a small business owner whos business is doing well, L'm worried.
Sam's, North Wal-Mart and Gander lost my business over how they dealt with those phoney complaints. So what happens next Christmas when those complainers decide "hey lets complain about all of the bell ringers", will they drop the bell ringing completely? I was a bell ringer this past Christmas. There are no words to describe how it left me feeling inside once my shift was over. I tried to sign up for more shifts at the same location but it was already full.
The only reason I continue to go to the Fruitland Wal-Mart is that it's closer to where I live. If I'm only going to the one location why bother driving all the way to Salisbury. If they act like North Wal-Mart this coming Christmas they won't get another dime out of me.
North WalMart is closer to me, but I go to Fruitland, because the traffic is insane in North Salisbury.
To R Budd 6:48 - No they will not get rid of part-timers , they get rid of full-timers . It cost a company more money because the company has to pay for benefits . Most large companies have a 60% part-time to a 40% full-time ratio.
This is great, now they will only have one register open on saturday morning instead of two.

Actually many companies would prefer the older generation to work becauseyou actually get work out of them versus the young lazy crowds.
