Top Democrat says he used ‘poor choice of words’ during 2008 campaign
WASHINGTON - The top Democrat in the U.S. Senate apologized on Saturday for comments he made about Barack Obama's race during the 2008 presidential bid which are quoted in a yet-to-be-released book about the campaign.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada described in private then-Sen. Obama as "light skinned" and "with no Negro dialect, unless he wanted to have one." Obama is the nation's first African-American president.
"I deeply regret using such a poor choice of words. I sincerely apologize for offending any and all Americans, especially African-Americans for my improper comments," Reid said in a statement released after the excerpts were first reported on the Web site of The Atlantic magazine.

I'm a black male and I found this slightly humorous. Seriously, lets face it folks; we are all racist to some degree. We all prejudge people because of race. This is because:
a) God created us as imperfect beings
b) As imperfect beings, we constantly seek people, places, and things familiar to us, and
c) Subsequent isolation from people that are "different" leads to us developing our own views of people from other races based on our own (and people like us) perception. These views are often NOT backed up by facts.
This goes for all of us around the globe. The trick is for us not to allow what we know is a natural phenomenon to cloud our logic/judgement and prevent us from working towards the common goals that we all share. I'm proud to be a Black American. Just as many of you reading this should be proud to be white Americans. We've all contributed greatly to this nation. But the most important word here is "American"!
funny isn't it, the democrats like reid and byrd keep telling the blacks how much they want to help them if they just vote for them, then their true feelings are exposed!
JUST IMAGINE IF RUSH LIMBAUGH had said this. Sharpton is now backing up Reid. Democrats are the most morally bankrupt people on earth.
Can someone, black, white or otherwise, explain to me how Harry Reid says something like this and Joe Biden says what he said and they are just able to say sorry and everything is Ok. On the other side, trent Lott made is comment and he loses his position as senate minority leader and then left the senate for good. Seems to me to be a rather obvious double standard. Democrats claim to care about blacks but they say things like this, end school voucher programs, and raise minimum wage which causes unemployment to go up especially among minorities. It seems dems just want your votes.

Frankly I don't like the president of the United States of American being called "african" anything.

Do you realize he thinks you are not smart enough to make your own decisions. Harry Reid is a hypocrite. Will Sharpton support such a comment from a conservative. DEMAND HE RESIGN TOMORROW.
I want to set something straight. The word negro was the latin (dead language) word for black. Just like caucasin is latin for white. And if blacks want to be called African Americans then whites should be called Euro Americans. You know I am just saying. But I prefer just American. LOL.

Good words, seriously bro, thank you but why is it that so many Democrats and so many minorities get a pass when they say or do the most stupid things, but when ANY conservative utters even the smallest moronic remark, the fervent howling calls for "off with their head" are picked up in the media and magnified 1000 fold? The guy ends up resigning in disgrace and Nancy Pelosi licks her chops and utters a satisfying belch as another enemy has been consumed.
9:21, easy answer. It's called politics. Just take note, that often it's not the common (black) man that howls for their downfall. It is the Sharptons and others that stand to gain politically.
The right uses the same tactics. Let someone sound like they are not patriotic (Michelle Obama) or not thump their bible hard enough, and you see the same result.
